You could maybe give the cat a 1mg dosage of melatonin.

has anyone had positive change after neutering a male cat? We neutered ours yesterday and by night he was already out of narcosis and as loud and as active as always. Or does it take a few days for him to settle down and whatever cat testosterone/horny hormones to leave his body?
The c**t is so fricking loud the only way to keep sane at night is to have him in our windowed balcony where its 5-10 celsius and like two walls/doors between him and us.

Indeed. In the case of castrated humans, it takes one month before testosterone fully leaves the body

Btw OP does your cat sleeps with you? If not, and you lock him out of your room, then maybe the cat want to be close with you.

    Some additional info:
The clerk at the pharmacy offered me some homeopathic herb extract (i.e. scam) and suggested I could also give Hoggar Night which would be 'safe' but it contains lactose - I don't want to give him stomach aches, I specifically only give him lactose free milk to avoid it.

Why? I'm miserable and so is my cat. He's like an infant screaming several hours per night, except with infants you know eventually things will get better. I treat him very well, he's got lots of space, good food etc. if I had to give him to the animal shelter his life would be much worse. But I need to sleep, I don't want to lock him in at night because he'll scream even more and ear plugs aren't enough.
Is this not the animal board? Where should I ask?

He sleeps when I'm at work and he's an old cat so he doesn't respond much to play or other physical activities.

He hates other cats but likes dogs. I don't have time to walk a dog every day, unfortunately.

Anywhere that isn't a board notorious for trolling. Once again my friends dog had kidney issues for trying to behave him by giving him meds.

Nice anecdotal evidence. I don't want to knock him out with horse tranquilizers, he's not a rabid dog tearing apart my apartment, I just need a mild sedative to calm him down for a few hours.

Happens quite a bit. If you wanna poison your pet like other dog and cat owners do then go ahead

It literally says in the article that it's caused by giving the wrong meds or dosage.

Yes you don't give out meds that aren't prescribed to your pet, dumbass. Same exact thing happened to my friends situation with his dog instead of going to vet

My friends husky had kidney issues after giving him meds because he wouldn't stop tearing up furniture and shoes. Wouldn't do it

Old people take dozens of pills a day, one sleeping pill per night won't kill a cat, unless it's some serious tranquilizer.

Why are you here then? From experience it gave my friends dod kidney issues and it they had to put him to sleep

Animals have different reaction to substances than humans. Good example is chocolate or xilit for dogs. Dogs can fricking die from those shit. Not every human medication do good for animals, and in fact, yes, it can kill them.

Try playing with it before sleeping time, and give them plenty of food. If they still don1t want to sleep then lock it out of your room to a safe place where it won't frick things up, and have access to the litter.

Seconding the food thing. Especially for an old cat who doesn't get into play much, next best thing is a meal right before bed time.

What's your cat doing to keep you up at night? If he's just running around or fricking with shit, that's enough energy that he should be up to play. Is he yowling or something?

Old people take dozens of blood thinners. One spoon of rat poison won't kill you.
