once the horses evolve to grow thicker coat and survive the winter, their population will grow rapidly, they will eat the island bare and will all die out.

      >A study published in 2019 found that the Sable Island horses had about three times the level of parasite eggs in their fecal material than domesticated horses, averaging 1500 eggs per gram. These included a parasitic lungworms that caused respiratory diseases; the horses also suffered from reproductive diseases. Necropsies of carcasses inspected in 2017 and 2018 showed that young horses died of starvation and hypothermia, particularly during extreme winters, as they would not have a sufficient reserve of body fat and suitable vegetation is sparse on the island during winter. Adults died of other causes. These results confirmed a similar study from 1972. The study also found that these horses incidentally consume significant quantities of sand, which gradually wears down their teeth and blocks their gastrointestinal tract.
      >Typical mortality rates are about 1% annually; during a harsh 2017 spring, the mortality rate was 10%.
Man, the least they could do is erect a few artificial shelters across the island. Seems cruel to dump horses on there and then let them suffer under these shitty conditions.

Apparently, the government proposed moving the horses off the island because they were damaging its ecology, but the public demanded they leave the horses there for some reason. So the government caved in and made a law protecting the horses from human interference.
I don’t get it. They’re an invasive species and they’re also not doing so well in that environment, so it would benefit the island and the horses to move them away.

Because people are actual fricking morons. These horses are inbred, disease prone mutt mutants unsuited to the environment who should honestly just be culled and put out of their misery, rather than be given the chance to pollute other horse lines and continually wear down the ecological integrity of the island. They can't even be claimed to have gone wild on their own because various horse breeds were deliberately brought to the island over the course of a hundred years or so. Yet, much like brumbies or mustangs or Outer Banks horses, people cling to them as a cultural heritage just because they exist. Nevermind that they were being slaughtered for dog food in the 1950s.
