anybody here own ringneck doves? I bought this goofball a couple months ago and still can't decide if it's male or female. definitely not as smart as a pigeon, but very social and easy to handle. what do the different vocalizations mean? he/she only makes about three or four distinct sounds and I have read lots of different explanations for what they mean

      You only have one?
They really should be in pairs.

it's a shame we're getting so many fancy pigeon breeds
pigeons used to be one of the healthiest domestic animals we had, since they were nearly all bred for communications, which required a strong, fast and intelligent pigeon

on the other hand, the wild pigeon population has been growing stronger, due to all the mail pigeons that were released when they were no longer useful, their genes have spread throughout most wild populations at this point

I unironically keep pigeons. I think all other animals on earth cant compare to how amazing pigeons are. I keep Jocobins, Fantails, Old German Owls, and a few more breeds. easiest animals to take care of on earth. a 40 pound bag of food for 2 pigeons will last a literal year.

I personally think the "wild type" are cool but there's some fancy breeds that I commonly see at my local livestock auction.
Pic is one of the types.

Imagine overpaying for a horribly inbred animal that can only see in one direction and lives half as long as its natural counterparts

Pigeons in Captivity live about 20 years and wild pigeons in rural areas can live up to 25. Most pigeons and pigeon breeds are selectivly breed. The only downside to certain breeds ive seen in my own experience with the birds is being that some birds are over bred and their beaks are too short to feed their young. It doesnt mean they can eat like regular birds because they can. it just means that when those breeds lay eggs you must put those eggs under surrogate parents. Which is something I do anyways because some breeds of birds are terrible with sitting on eggs.

This is by far the most extreme example of the beak shortness. This Oriental Frill Pigeon can eat just fine. He just wont be able to fedd his/her young because their beak is too small to get the chicks inside their mouth for pigeon milk

they're very slow to become comfortable with you, and you will need two of them
they shit every 3 hours but it's odorless and hardens pretty quickly
you can't burn any incense, candles, use air fresheners, or allow any smoke build-up because they have pretty sensitive lungs
for that reason it's ideal to give them a well ventilated room away from kitchens and bathrooms especially when you're cooking

they're pretty smart and you can train them
    they pass the mirror test
    they're also really quiet
they have soft beaks so their bites don't hurt like parrots or wieneratiels
their wing slaps are only a mild sting at worst
if you plan on owning a bird but don't like how noisy parrots and songbirds can be, pigeons are probably the best alternative

      >they pass the mirror test
it's basically a test for how concerned an animal is with grooming itself and how visually oriented it is at this point

technically most elephants and dolphins do not pass the mirror test even if they show other behaviors that can only be explained as self recognition/examination. gorillas almost don't, until you find out they wipe off the mark an hour later. dogs supposedly do not, but then we have countless videos of them using mirrors to locate...their owners. rather than jumping into the mirror like an idiot. and cats are meant to be even dumber than dogs, but there's lots of times when they have used mirrors to figure out what was behind them, and attack their own ears.

officially, pigeons have about as many neurons in their entire brain as a cat has in its cortex (no point in comparing cerebral cortexes, birds brains integrate information using different pathways - more efficient ones.). what does pigeon intelligence tell you about cats and everything else? if the pigeon is pretty smart, maybe the cat doesn't really care, and you're lucky the dog half asses it.

      >or allow any smoke build-up because they have pretty sensitive lungs
why do they live in cities then

pigeons in urban environments rarely live longer than 3 years, whereas pigeons in captivity can live upwards of 15 years
if you don't mind potentially hurting your bird because you accidentally burnt the bacon then i wouldn't recommend getting any 'exotic' pets

          i don't want a bird i'm just wonderin
guess it would explain why there's a lot of em though

          >pigeons in urban environments rarely live longer than 3 years
This has nothing to do with their lungs and everything to do with car mortality, resource abundance and human persecution
