Whales are honestly the scariest most terrifying creature I can think of. Imagine this endless blue abyss.

Whales are honestly the scariest most terrifying creature I can think of.

Imagine this endless blue abyss. Just miles and miles of empty water in every direction, a total featureless deep abyss.

And then out of the distance emerges this huge abomination, a gigantic monstrosity a hundred metres long with these huge fins. Slowly edging towards you in the water while letting out these deep low pitch screams at you.

The mere idea of it freaks me out.

Baleen whales are some of the most gentle and peaceful animals, they are aware of us and will not try to hurt, scare or "eat" an human being.

What's interesting is that most of the big whales evolved to flee from threats. Only sperm whales and humpbacks fight back, the latter doing so by slapping shit like large sharks and orcas with their flippers. Even the blue whale is designed for speed rather than combat, and it gets preyed on by orcas occasionally.

I don't fear whales as a concept, but swimming close to them would admittedly make me very uncomfortable. Animals that big in a medium as alien as open waters always leave an impression for better or worse.

I very much not like that the rumbling of certain whales is so high decibrl can kill you up close, though. Doesn't feel fair. I also have a hard time thinking orcas and sperm whales wouldn't actively eat people if they could. Like, you alone floating in the water, no big ship, no boat, no crowd, how could a killer fricking whale come across that and not consider eating you? Just because you aren't a seal? I don't trust toothed whales

Unironically yes, even taking our relative lack of fat out of the question (we’re practically just bone and skin to sea predators) Orcas in particular are very picky eaters. Certain pods will only eat certain prey, even if other available prey is nearby. Obviously not all are like that, but they exist. As for why they don’t frick with people when they commit marine hate crimes every single day just for keks, who knows. They’re highly intelligent and actively pass knowledge down to their young, and lord knows we’ve been nothing but absolutely destructive to the oceans.

Even a morbidly obese person would be anorexic tier compared to a small seal, let alone a lot of the other creatures in the sea. The interesting thing with orcas though is that they’re total sociopaths to everything else, they’ll actively torment something that may be a part of their chosen diet for fun without even eating it. All except for people, aside from what certain native american tales used to speak of centuries ago. Keep in mind they love messing with stingrays and punting seals in the air with their tails. Yet on the flip side there’s been records of them helping people out, nevermind the fact that they’ll also completely ignore you.

Maybe they have realized that humans can wipe them out and don't want to frick with them.

Definitely possible. They’re pretty smart and you don’t even need a single gun to cause a lot of damage and death in the oceans. I mean imagine being an orca and all of a sudden you start seeing these big metal contraptions with all these nets and hooks and shit on the sides spearing down the depths below taking out all sorts of prey like its nothing. That must be like some War of The Worlds kind of shit to them. And god help any of them that happen to go near the Chinese.
