We know the stories of the kraken; tales of ships getting wrecked from humongous octupi, but where did they go? I have a theory, here's a colossal squid that washed up on NZ the other day. Pic unrel but link is here. https://www.ndtv.com/offbeat/once-in-a-lifetime-sighting-giant-deep-sea-squid-carcass-washes-up-on-new-zealand-beach-3339633

    >NZ is close to Antarctica with ice melting deep sea creatures and unknown species are appearing

These things have always been there, they didn't go away. They are just rarely seen because they live in very deep water and if they end up sick or dead on the surface there's a hell of a lot of water for you to be in the right place at the right time to see it before it's gobbled up by something else. My buddy saw one dead only a few miles out off the coast fishing, also in nz, after going to see what a bunch of seagulls were looking at. I'd say they almost certainly inspired the stories, imagine being a sailor back in the day who had never heard of such a species and one day by chance there's this big squid fricker on the surface and when you go for a look it starts grabbing at the boat. I'm pretty sure too that there's been whales with scarring on them from suckers bigger than any specimen we have had

The squid shown in the article is a giant squid, colossal squids are a totally different species. They have a thick mantle, larger eyes, and short tentacles with hooks (the one on OP pic). They are also very rare because you can only encounter them around Antartica. Giant squids are found almost everywhere and the legend of the Kraken is probably inspired by sightings of dying giant squids by sailors. They are known to hold on boats and surfboards but they don't try to sink them.

it's actually called a sperm whale because of the liquid inside of its head

The original kraken wasn’t described as a giant squid or octopus. It was described as a fish so big sailors mistook it for an island.
They did find a giant octopus bigger than any known octopus washed up on a beach in the Bahamas, but because they didn’t keep the specimen the species was never classified. The locals claim that these giant octopus live in the “blue holes” underwater cave systems underneath the islands are responsible for the disappearances of divers and swimmers from time to time. They call them the lusca.

There’s no whales in Loch Ness.

You mean people thinking it was a tentacle, right? Even then, that doesn’t explain stories of giant sea monsters accosting ships.

We have documented cases of whales traveling further than this into fresh water.

Drunk bored sailors and big fish.
You're a bunch of dudes who haven't done anything but sail across open water for days, watch after watch, and then one day you sail past a dead squid on the surface and it bumps into the boats and everyone goes "AVAST YA BLEEDIN SEA DOGS! DIDJA SEE THAT KRAKEN ATTACK THE SHIP! THANK GOD AND THE KING OUR CAPTAIN IS SUCH A FINE SEAMAN!"

Fun fact, the skin of whale dick was harvested by whalers and turned into rain slickers.
People knew the intricacies of whales for a long time because of how useful they are as a source for all kinds of things.
