You'll get a cat that will love you if you go to a shelter, every cat is different but they all are capable of love.
I recommend you to adopt an adult that has an already set loving personality, with kittens you won't know what you'll get until they're like 1 year old.
I have been a permanent and temporary cat shelter for years and I found that rescues that had a harsh start in life are more loving and less entitled than breeder's cats, as if they're actually thankful that you "saved them" for their shitty situations.

picrel. my Norwegian forest demon lord from hell that actually talks sometimes and has anxious attachment to me and me only, loves belly rubs, laying on top of the keyboard and to terrorize other cats in the house.

If a warm and cuddly cat wakes you up from your sleep, you probably should get some help for that insomnia.

Is it even worth attempting if I work late evening hours or should I just consider finding an older one to adopt

Neither will the cat. It just has instincts that evolved to trigger your affections. Unlike a dog, the cat is not aware that you are a separate individual who can be interacted with on a personal level. You’re just an object in whatever world the cat lives in.

Does this matter to you if the behaviors are 99% the same?

          >Unlike a dog, the cat is not aware that you are a separate individual who can be interacted with on a personal level.
          Scientifically and empirically false.

Cats love certain humans and hate other ones.

Cats also prefer certain furniture items to others. Based on their instincts and operant conditioning. As a cat owner, you must come to terms with the fact that you are just moving furniture to something you love.

              >least moronic cat hater

My cat cries whenever I leave.
When I close my room door she meows at the door and paws under the door wanting to be let in.
This is after I already fed her.

This dog owner is lying. That is called a dog, buttsniffer. Cats are above being that much of a cuck.

You have no fricking idea how annoying it is to have a dog or dogs that freak out when you leave. My parents' dogs do this and the dogs they had before also did it. I fricking hated it so much growing up and I still do. You can't go outside without having the auditory equivalent of a railroad spike being hammered into your fricking eardrums.
If dogs couldn't bark they'd be so much fricking better.

I helped with guide dogs for blond people when i was younger. I'd keep the puppies a year or two. I had two and both were very smart, the first one was a genius dog and we kept him two years instead of one since he behaved already very well. This little boi barked only once in 1999 when the biggest storm of the century pushed a tree to almost fall on the appartment.
The other one barked very little and we taught it out of him within 2 months. By yhe time he reached his adult size he was barely barking.

Glad blondes are getting the help they need.

Also it's breed dependent. You can't train a small terrier not to bark without a shock collar or straight abuse - then you get a biter without warning.
