Why are humans so scared of spiders? We don’t care about flies, ants, millipedes or even scorpions tbh (I think they’re cool) so what is it about spiders?

yall homiez ever see a male black widow?

its so strange how this creature is completely ignored in comparison to the female.
i would argue that not a single person alive as actually seen one. its quite strange how it remains out of sight from the human world. maybe it knows something? or maybe you just dont know anything...
    so strange how this works

Black widow females are already small, maybe the males are nearly microscopic

It's a fear learned through and normalized by society.
I was in my early 20's before overcoming my, at the time crippling, fear or arachnids/insects just through intentional exposure. I'm now studying entomology at Uni.

spiders are more dangerous than spider shills would have you believe. sidney funnel-web spiders enter your house and love small dark spaces like the inside of a shoe. they react very violently if you accidentally bother them.
brazilian banana spiders have potent venom that causes an unending erection and paralysis and can be encountered at the supermarket if you're unlucky enough
    >but some species are harmless!
don't care. a bear is more likely to be harmless than not but nobody wants to live surrounded by bears. the world would be a better place if we exterminated spiders

In the far, far past they must've been such a big problem that it was necessary to program an extreme fear of them into our dna. It wouldn't be such an extreme guttural fear programmed into nearly everyone on earth if they weren't a huge threat. I can only imagine what was going on back then.. The real headscracher is whybso many women are scared of these little fellows. Their bite is so pitifully weak it wouldn't even hurt a child and it will scurry away far before you could even get the chance to accidentally touch one. Plus they're so cute!

Spiders are frens. Never gotten bit handling any and I pick them up all the time. One did bite me when it sneaked into my bed during winter; it was really cold and I guess wanted some heat, but I didn't know it was there and kind of rolled my hand over it and got a nip. Went away in a few days. I'm only wary of Australian ones since some of those can actually do you some harm.

Lots of people are afriad of milipedes and scorpions as well, and the reason is simply that humans are illogical, it doesn't matter if we know they can't harm us and we can easily kill them because people react to a stimulus emotionally first and rationally second. We're scared of them because they simply look ugly and gross so our immediate emotional response is disgust, and disgust is an emotion close to fear, especially when the thing that disgusts you is moving in your direction. It's not even just humans, there's tons of videos on the internet of animals being startled by creepy crawlies.

I fricking love spiders, but I still wouldn't touch one.
I think it's because of the fact that their main weapon isn't as easy to see coming as say... a scorpion.
When you see a scorpion, you know the only dangerous parts are the stinger, which is something you can see coming (even though they sting fast as frick) and the pincers, 99% of Scorpion species can't hurt you with those though.
    >flies
More of an annoyance because they're harmless, except the African kinds that sting. If we had those in Europe they'd probably be grouped up with wasps in the "FRICK OFF HOLY SHIT GET AWAY GET AWAY FROM ME".
    >millipedes
Most people are grossed out by them I think, they're neat though.
Centipedes are nasty frickers, however. It has to be the mandibles.

Thing is looking at an image of a tiger or whatever isn't scary to anyone but simply seeing a picture of a spider is enough for many people to get spooked. Their very shape is programmed in us to be frightening.

Jumping spiders however will always be little dogs with eight legs. They're very predictable in movement, none have dangerous venom, can actually be trained, and have big sweet eyes that stare at you inquisitively. When one jumps on me at most I'll back up a bit and be like "hey!" But the initial shock isn't nearly as strong as any other spider. With other spiders I'm screaming and heading for the hills in the first two seconds. Fun fact, I had a laser pointer once and found a jumping spider and it actively tried to catch the light just a cat or dog.

Even if most are harmless the fact that venomous spiders, including ones that can actually kill people, even exist makes a good amount of people fearful of them since they might not be able to identify whatever spider is in front of them as harmless immediately if at all.
Couple that with their small size potentially letting them get into clothes/making them hard to detect.

      Anonymous

This but more because it's in our DNA to be afraid of potentially poisonous spiders, not a conscious thing. Same reason why people and a lot of animals are afraid of snakes.

        Anonymous

Man, its weird, I don't get instantly scared when I see a snake. But when they start moving it looks so damn creepy.
        >Tiny snake in garage
        >try to get it outside with a broomstick
        >fricker almost shoots up the stick like a lightning bolt
        >acquire jacket & welding gloves
        >try again
        >ran outside with that little bastard on the stick & sphincter fully clenched

        Frick that shit

Much like spiders, the more time you spend with snakes the more you realize they're actually pretty chill and a little goofy if theyre not terrified for their lives, in which case they're capable of moving pretty explosively in any direction. THAT is what I think the core of the fear is based around, the unpredictability of their movement. You got "might maybe kill you" and "might go pretty much fricking anywhere REALLY FAST," thats a decent combo for spooks.
Have a pic of one of my girls being cute and comfy in a cork tube.

There's definitely something to that, humans HATE the idea of something moving unpredictably. I grew up and had never seen (or at least remembered seeing) a wienerroach in real life, and for all that time I couldn't understand why so many people were horrified by what was basically just a long, ugly beetle. Then all the way in my adulthood I pulled something off a shelf in a store and saw one flop off what I was holding, hit the ground, and scurry away. Seeing that little bastard move was all it took for me to instantly understand every single person who had tried to explain why wienerroaches freak them out. Something about the erratic, frantic way a roach moves just triggers a million danger flags in our brains, even though roaches themselves are harmless.

epigenetic thing maybe, like the chickens scattering for cover from the hawk silhouette

bang on in my case at least. used to be afraid of all bugs. still kinda scared of moths and roaches but quite fond of spooders, scorpions, and a few others now.

Same for me, garter-bro. I was terrified of them until I got a few tarantulas. I also realized that they are a bit goofy and now I started to tong feed them without fear. Magnificent creatures.

            Anonymous

This is definitely part of it, people aren't as scared of ants, probably brcause they move in straighter lines at more constant speeds making them predictable, unlike spiders which in seconds go from perfectly still to bolting across the floor in zigzags.

It's strange, the snake fear gene isn't in me at all while the spider one is. Within the first second or two of seeing a spider before I can react my instincts go into full drive to make me jump backwards but the exact opposite is true for snakes. When I see one I immediately get the urge to catch it, and many times I have. Very strange being that my whole family hates snakes.

If that's true, what explains the phenomenon where they appear larger to arachnophobes? I can't imagine a behavior that changes the way your brain perceives size to be learned.

Venomous vs. poisonous. Venom is injected, poison is ingested. A deadly poisonous spider would be one you eat and get sick from.
