Truffle Dog

I want a dog for hunting truffles. Are lagotto romagnolo’s really (non-negligibly) superior? They look kinda gay tbh

OK here's your answer NO, they aren't some god truffle hunting dog. Like was pointed out before, any dog with a good nose will perform just as well. They were originally bred as water retrievers before the marshes were drained in ~1930, don't believe the bullshit that they were bred for hunting truffles. Lagotto romagnolo was only repurposed into a truffle dog because of their good sense of smell and the high demand plus price for truffles in Italy. If you are really worried about getting the best thing for hunting truffles get a fricking pig. Also, please don't breed dogs idiot.

Truffle pigs eat the truffles and are worse than dogs. I’m of the same opinion as you regarding their performance, but curious if there’s any data here.

meh pigs are also a lot better at finding truffles than dogs (and more easily trained for the task), so its hard to say if them eating the occasional truffle and being less mobile counteracts their other capabilities. What data are you looking for? On Lagotto Romagnolo's truffle hunting capabilities? There hasn't been any comparative research that I can find on dog breeds truffle hunting capabilities (truffle hunters are notoriously c**ts about sharing information and don't like competition). It also really depends on the quality of training not necessarily the type of breed. So my final verdict, get any breed that has an above average sense of smell and train it properly or find someone who could help train it. Lagotto romagnolo is definitely not necessary for a good truffle hunting dog, its essentially a fluffy labrador not some dog that has innate truffle hunting capabilities.

Another one of my reservations is that they’re of Italian origin.

And BTW, if I get one I’d be inclined to get a breeding pair. I don’t know anything about dog breeding but breed chickens, plants and fungi and am generally very interested in it.

      >I know how to breed chickens and propagate plants, therefore I should breed dogs
HOLY BRAINLET, the world doesn't need anymore stupid dog breeders. The fact you don't know that any hunting/tracking dog, or any literally any breed can be trained for this purpose and that you think you need a specific, expensive, and rare breed is proof enough of your moron status. I hope this is a troll post.

The breeders doggays consider smart are already quite stupid
        >muhhh werrrrrrk! driiiiiive! first command every time!
        >dog: is wholly unsuitable to life outside the doggay larper world where dogs are sporting equipment and mostly live in kennels, just like a real English nobleman’s estate!
        >dog: *dies at 12 from seizures*
        >well we tested them for degenerative myelopathy and hip dysplasia must have been because they didn’t use my recommended dog food

Spay and neuter destroyed the companion dog 🙁

Now you can only have the unhealthy and dumb/gross companion breeds or hyper working dogs

All dog breeders are stupid, plus only in it for the profit and muh XD cute puppies

Don't know what you think companion dogs are, but traditionally dogs only offered companionship as a byproduct, their main purpose was for working. Its only been the modern breeding agenda to fit the change in lifestyle that ruined most dogs. Every dog is marketed as a companion and not for their original purposes that they were selectively bred to fulfill.

Originally, and I mean very originally, ALL dogs were almost purely purely companions. It was not possible for the humans of 40,000 years ago to figure out inheritance and breed a working animal. Any working functions of the dog were, like those of the cat, purely coincidental and unreliable, due to them being natural predators. This was likely the state of dogs from 40,000 years ago to shortly after agriculture really started spreading.

Basically, dogs self-domesticated because humans thought they were cute enough to allow to hang out around our garbage and for longer than civilization has existed that's all they were, was cute.

Until recently this standard dog, the street mutt, call it what you want was still very numerous. Europeans in particular had a hardon for exterminating them as
            >EVERY LIVING THING MUST SERVE THE CHURCH I MEAN QUEEN I MEAN GDP I MEAN...
and spay and neuter seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for the standard dog. The medium sized, fluffy, sometimes pointy sometimes not generic mutt in much of the west.

In north america, the standard dog was in effect until european settlers basically exterminated it. It was not unlike a japanese breed - it may guard, may help with hunts, but litters are not 100% automatically dedicated to one job and you definitely didn't have "sporting" creatures like pointers that only work in a lavish "sportsmans" hunting arrangement, or threats to humanity like modern protection dogs, best suited to a distinctly white activity: being an antisocial hermit and killing people who come too close to you.

The white man abhors freedom. He abhors dignity. He abhors liberty. For everyone but himself. If he had his way, he would also do this to the cat.

            Now you have two choices:
Neurotic working dog that WILL tear up your house and bite people if not used as a "turn on, turn off" tool
Highly inbred and deformed "companion dog" like pugs and golden retrievers

While I agree with you on dogs being ruined through selective breeding (spay and neuter). You're reaching on quite a lot. You can't really believe that the human dog relationship started because they found them cute lmao. It is much more likely they were used as hunting companions or just straight up eaten. You're trying to say something definitive on a subject that has very little information, and the theory they were around only to eat garbage and as something to be cute has to be one of the most moronic theories of the bunch. Also where the frick you get the 40000 year mark, most research cites the first domesticated dogs of being around 10000-15000 years ago, around the same time agriculture and animal husbandry were also being developed.

                >10-15k
                At least 23,000. Possibly more.

                >You can't really believe that the human dog relationship started because they found them cute lmao.
Religious significance is more likely and very plausible

Also it's true, white europeans really ruined dogs. Everything outside of the primitive spitz group is actual shit. Awful smelling. Shit eating/. Barks too much. The herding dogs I can excuse but most of the hunting dogs are really for an agricultural man's sport, not feeding yourself, and would consume more than they'd contribute.

the 23,000+ dates are given by extrapolation of much earlier samples. In the research paper on the subject they admit that making inferences on such data is pretty much impossible without older samples or a larger number of samples. " The inference of complex patterns of gene flow is challenging, or even impossible, when only modern samples are studied. Therefore, the acquisition of a broader set of ancient samples, including ancient representatives from Central and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East will be crucial to further clarify the details of dog domestication and evolution." Its a very unknown subject, that's why I tend to caution on the earlier side where samples are definitive and the relationship with humans can be more accurately confirmed rather than just DNA divergence.

Consider that a lot of people still keep dogs like outdoor cats and they look suspiciously like smallish wolves

It’s probably a much older practice and leashes and breeds only came along with agriculture which marked the point of aesthetic degeneration for both species

Dude, I literally said I don’t know anything about dog breeding. I mentioned the chickens because breeding and husbandry is a hobby of mine.

I’m aware any dog can be trained for this purpose. The question I explicitly asked if this breed is non-negligibly superior.
