Toxoplasmosis gondii

I recently had to move in with an outdoor catgay as my only living option, and the vague stuff Wauf says about this shit had me terrified. Ended up doing some research into it, and wanted to share what I found and start an actual discussion without the hyperbole (if we can)

Firstly I want to distinguish toxoplasma gondii and latent toxoplasmosis; toxoplasma gondii is essentially food poisoning that only really affects pregnant women and is tied to infant mortality, head deformation, vision issues, mental disability and seizures. Latent toxoplasmosis is a long term parasitic infection caused by toxoplasma gondii. Whenever Wauf refers to 'T. gondii,' they actually mean latent toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasma gondii starts it's life in a cat's stomach, the only animal it can breed in, as an oocyst which contains sporozoites. The oocyst ends up in the cat shit and can spread around, infecting by either being inhaled or digested.
I looked into it and the only effective common cleaner you can use to kill oocysts are ammonia; 10% at least. Sauce:
https://sci-hub.ru/https://doi.org/10.2307/3277601
https://sci-hub.ru/https://doi.org/10.2307/3284606

One ingested or inhaled the oocyst is shed releasing the sporozoites, which turn into tachyzoites. The tachyzoites turn into bradyzoites once they come into contact with the central nervous system, and the bradyzoites are the latent toxoplasmosis.

The only way to test for latent toxoplasmosis infection in humans is a serologic test for high immunoglobulin G (IgG), an antibody to T. gondii.

Majority of toxoplasmosis infections are caused by undercooked meat.
This is like blaming the 400 yearly aircraft deaths for all transportation deaths even though cars kill about 35,000 a year in the U.S. alone.

    Fricking morons.

literally half, not a majority. almost like humans eat both meat and vegetables. unlike meat, vegetables are routinely eaten undercooked. also, they literally would not happen if cats were kept indoors. this is not a reason to shift the goalposts to meat. the problem is lazy and delusional pet owners turning what should be a stomach ache and runny shits into death.

      >guys the pitbulls deaths were caused by...subpar training! cynophobes!
      >the other 10,000 dog breeds: do not randomly kill people if not perfectly trained
      >NO THIS IS NO REASON TO HATE PITBULLS REEEE

      https://i.imgur.com/eDcySiv.gif

      Not that anon, but,
      >Huh, here's a disease that kills hundreds of people every year and we could wipe it out by being responsible pet owners. Interesting.
This is debatable given the number of stray cats there are, as well as the fact rescued strays go insane and start destroying the house if you don't let them out. The catgay I mentioned living with in OP has one like that.
On top of strays, can rabbits live for years.

I'm not defending outdoor cats at all (especially as a bird lover), but the situation is definitely more complicated than you're making it out to be. In order to potentially "wipe out" toxoplasma gondii there would need to be a concerted effort to capture all (or nearly all) strays in a given country, and (presumably) euthanize the ones incapable of adapting to indoor-only life. This would be a MAJOR undertaking.

      >Also, it looks like Wauf was wrong and latent toxoplasmosis doesn't do anything.
I wasn't necessarily saying it does 'nothing,' but that there are flaws in the logic of the research methods used, and that correlation to schizophrenia is definitely overblown. Pic related is the result.
Wauf is wrong, but the common Wauf take is essentially that toxoplasma gondii is a microscopic headcrab that turns you into a cat loving headcrab zombie, so that's a given.

      >This is debatable given the number of stray cats there are, as well as the fact rescued strays go insane and start destroying the house if you don't let them out.

well if you count cats as "meat" then meat is definitely the leading cause of toxo. now where's my #5 with chow mein?

            raw meat*
Eating undercooked, contaminated meat (especially pork, lamb, and venison) or shellfish (for example, oysters, clams or mussels).
Accidental ingestion of undercooked, contaminated meat or shellfish after handling them and not washing hands thoroughly (Toxoplasma cannot be absorbed through intact skin).
Eating food that was contaminated by knives, utensils, cutting boards and other foods that have had contact with raw, contaminated meat or shellfish.
Drinking water contaminated with Toxoplasma gondii.
Accidentally swallowing the parasite through contact with cat feces that contain Toxoplasma. This might happen by
            Cleaning a cat’s litter box when the cat has shed Toxoplasma in its feces;
Touching or ingesting anything that has come into contact with cat feces that contain Toxoplasma; or
Accidentally ingesting contaminated soil (e.g., not washing hands after gardening or eating unwashed fruits or vegetables from a garden).
            Mother-to-child (congenital) transmission.
Receiving an infected organ transplant or infected blood via transfusion, though this is rare.

French have a high % of toxo and it's because of tartare

And this would all be a non issue if cats were kept indoors, which would also benefit cats. Outdoor cats suffer more and die sooner.

              >no surely the disease is spread by fleas not rats stop hating the rats that have the disease and transmit it to fleas and bring them into our homes they din du nuffin -your logic

Most of those issues does not have to do with cats. The affect with toxo and cats is pretty much insignificant

Toxo (one of the most fatal diseases transmitted by these activities) only exists in the food supply because of cats roaming outdoors. Eliminating outdoor cats would reduce toxo cases to almost nothing. And there is no reason not to. They also kill off vulnerable and fragile wildlife, and suffer and die themselves.

                >but surely, it is the fleas. the rats have nothing to do with it!
                >why are the fleas here and where did they get plague.

and they would not have toxo, along with all the people who dared to eat salad (the other 50% of toxo cases), if cats were kept indoors, which would also improve the quality of life and lifespan of the cats...

...so what is your point? we should let cats outdoors because you personally dislike the dietary choices that are associated with 50% of fatal toxo cases? despite the other 50%? or the literal animal abuse of outdoor cathomosexualry and its underlying harmful delusions?

The food poisoning kind 1: only exists because of outdoor cats, otherwise it cant breed 2: kills more people a year than dogs. In the US alone.

              Yes
              James Frazer wrote:
              >It was the custom to burn a basket, barrel, or sack full of live cats, which was hung from a tall mast in the midst of the bonfire; sometimes a fox was burned. The people collected the embers and ashes of the fire and took them home, believing that they brought good luck. The French kings often witnessed these spectacles and even lit the bonfire with their own hands. In 1648 Louis XIV, crowned with a wreath of roses and carrying a bunch of roses in his hand, kindled the fire, danced at it and partook of the banquet afterwards in the town hall. But this was the last occasion when a monarch presided at the midsummer bonfire in Paris. At Metz, midsummer fires were lighted with great pomp on the esplanade, and a dozen cats, enclosed in wicker cages, were burned alive in them, to the amusement of the people. Similarly at Gap, in the department of the Hautes-Alpes, cats used to be roasted over the midsummer bonfire.
              >Cat-burning was also described in The Great Cat Massacre, a scholarly work by American historian Robert Darnton:
Cats also figured in the cycle of Saint John the Baptist, which took place on June 24, at the time of summer solstice. Crowds made bonfires, jumped over them, danced around them, and threw into them objects with magical power, hoping to avoid disaster and obtain good fortune during the rest of the year. A favorite object was cats—cats tied up in bags, cats suspended from ropes, or cats burned at stake. Parisians liked to incinerate cats by the sackful, while the Courimauds (or "cour à miaud" or cat chasers) of Saint Chamond preferred to chase a flaming cat through the streets. In parts of Burgundy and Lorraine they danced around a kind of burning May pole with a cat tied to it. In the Metz region they burned a dozen cats at a time in a basket on top of a bonfire. The ceremony took place with great pomp in Metz itself, until it was abolished in 1765.

If you outright exterminated 4 distinct breed groups, there would be one or two dog related deaths a decade.
If cats were kept indoors there would be 0 feline related deaths a century.

And one of these options is literally not animal abuse. CATS ARE HAPPIER AND LONGER LIVED INDOORS.

Humans can't even "be responsible pet owners" by not keeping dogs that were explicitly bred to attack people as family pets, resulting in about 50 deaths in the US every single year. Expecting the massive hordes of cat owners to be more responsible than a small but dangerous minority of dog owners is seriously pushing it.

Some of the more interesting points of note,
    >There is no way to tell whether these behaviors are caused by T. gondii, or created a higher likelihood of getting infected by T. gondii (risky behavior, schizophrenia, etc.)
    >Tests showed people with T. gondii had an odds ratio of 1.43 for schizophrenia; for comparison a maternal family history of schizophrenia has a ratio of 9.31, paternal age over 54 at 5.92, and weed use at 2.93
