Thinking about getting a cat, any advice

I'm getting a cat (or kitten) since I live by myself and wanted to own a pet. So I figured I'd come here for advice. I'd have to get it as an emotional support one though since my apartment wouldn't allow pets unless it's emotional support. My family also said to get a female one because they're better than male cats. You guys have any advice? I just want one that's friendly.

The thread pic is a random cat photo. I don't know what color I'll end up with.

Treat them nice and they'll be nice. Be mean to them and they'll be mean and aloof. Cats are pretty simple in that regard. They all have their own personalities and will likely end up with some unique behaviors

So you want to break the law. What you want is illegal.

Cats are not low maintenance pets. Unless you want a filthy house or a dead outdoor cat they take more lifelong effort than dogs while living 20 years.

Oh no not the heckin lawerino! What would jesus think?

Dogs bring the filth inside too!

Cats generate the filth. Dogs are easy to manage. Towels, rags, brushes, and having a well maintained grass lawn with no dirt. I have both and rarely have to do any dog related cleaning.

PS: i do not have a stinking water dog or mop coated breed, most people do because retrievers are slavish morons. literally every other kind of dog is cleaner.

But floof dogs are the most fun!

Floof dogs, with just a little floof, are fun, and naturally clean, and good smelling. Too much floof and their unnaturally long coats become tangle-prone shit magnets that will collect their own turds and piss.

This also applies to cats. Really long haired cats need frequent grooming or turds get stuck in their fur, and then they lick them out. Where does the turd go? Back into the cat. You should avoid long haired cats if you value your sanity and time. Shorthairs will have less frequent hairballs as well, and are less prone to matting (their tongue is not a long toothed comb).

If you look at wild animals like wolves and snow leopards they have naturally well shaped, dense, practical fluff that's more of a "coat" than a mop head so they keep pretty clean on their own. Domestic animals are not always like that. And people don't always care or smell anything. The other end of the spectrum is short haired and hairless breeds with a lot of stinky skin oil, like labradors and sphinxes. Stinky sphinxes. Don't get a sphinx they're gross.

            Oh ye, dogs...
            Must go outside with
            Must clean form the walk
Covers itself in the other dog shit
Covers itself in any kind of dirt

Meanwhile cat runs OBSESSIVELY to bury shit in the litter box and won't get rest until you clean it

They pretty much are tbh. My cat goes in the backyard, shits in some dirt, never goes beyond the backyard, sleeps the majority of the time, gives minimum attention and is able to stay home alone for 3-4 days. it's the perfect pet

Around 10 years back I was at a buddy's appartment with my dog and the landlord barged in the door, started howling about how no dogs allowed, his response was maybe appropriate to busting us cutting off children's faces, but not a dog laying in the hallway doing nothing.

After he moved out we put a ladder to his ceiling and smeared the underside of the roof with moss. Don't know what the total cost of damage was but he had to replace his whole roof and delay his retirement. :> Unhinged rulegays deserve to be tortured by demons they can not see.

The emotional support animal law is a bullshit law anyway. It says that private owners with no prior animal behaviorist experience can train their own emotional support animal, and then is also is excessively vague on what even constitutes as an emotional support animal. So this law basically exists as a loophole so that people can have pets, but landlords can apply this one minimal extra barrier to allowing them to have pets, just to force them to put a tiny amount of thought into it before they get one. And then if there was a big dispute for whatever reason, they can go up before a judge who can look at the individual situation and decide which side to take to make the decision swing in either party’s favor depending on how he sees fit. Instead of having a law exists that clearly takes one side or the other before the situation ever occurs.

So if you have any issue with it, your real problem is with the law itself and with people who are following the law, not with people breaking it.

Cats are great, but understand that you can't train them into specific behavior. You really have to cater to them. If they don't like laps, no amount of forcing it will make them like laps. If they want to scratch the shit out of something, you either have to change the target to be not fun to scratch, or give them a better thing to scratch. You can't shame/punish them into not scratching it. Kittens have a frickton of energy and will demand your attention or become destructive. Even adult cats need regular play time or they'll get pent up energy and run around annoying the shit out of you at 3 AM.

Don't worry about them being friendly. Unless you're moronic and keep doing stuff the cat obviously hates, it'll love you.
