if you were bit by a bat, you'd know. even then, the chance it would have rabies is slim to none. stop overreacting, you absolute woman.

        You didn't.
Third world countries are still primitive because they are too busy worrying about being macho to be smart.
The Anon you replied to is the sort who would die from an infection in the past or in primitive places over a simple wound because "it's just a scratch".

Speaking of scratches. Rabies can be transmitted through a scratch as well as a bite. The SMART thing is to not take a chance. You did the smart thing.

Man, even when you have money the medical care is shit too. You have to shop around to get real treatment otherwise you just become a cash cow for a profit-driven industry who's revenue is dependent on not actually providing a cure when it can get away with it.

i've known plenty of people who went to the ER for a simple cut they could have just cleaned with peroxide and wrapped in gauze. couple bucks and a bit of knowledge is a lot better than paying the medical israelite.

Can't they test the bat for rabies?
I mean $6000 that is fucking fucked up but surely they could test the bat?

      Anonymous

the way you test animal is to dissect its brain, if it has rabies, you killed a rabid animal, if it didnt, you just kill an animal for no real reason. also shit gets expensive because of insurance companies

nothing happens to the thousands of dumbasses who are in OP's situation and don't get the vaccine
Why don't homeless people die of rabies, at least not in America?

For the record I'll say the wildlife bitch who came to OP's house is a dumbass, doctors are dumbasses about this subject, I'm not going full VIRUSES DON'T EXIST but the panic ITT is probably freaking out a lot of people who are susceptible to health anxiety

59000 deaths annually, most of which is africa and asia, which i guess is india because they have a wild dog problem. anyway, the reason why america doesnt really have a lot of deaths is because we dont have packs of feral dogs running around and bats only live in rural areas, so homeless people arent going to come into contact with them almost at all

Do not touch wild bats with your bare hands, or get near them. If you need to move them from inside a structure, call a professional and keep a distance until they arrive, or ideally vacate the structure. If you need to remove a wild animal, wear protective equipment like heavy bite-proof gloves, and use tools which give you distance from the animal etc and to get the animal outside.

If you were exposed to and fluid from the bat, like saliva, blood, etc especially from a bite, you should go immediately and see a medical professional and tell them what happened, and that you think you may have been exposed to rabies.

Rabies is treatable, but only in it's earliest stages, and it can take years (too late) to fully progress.

If you have an infestation, you probably need to either board up the holes they can entry your interior from, or contact your landlord/homeowner asap so that can happen.

Apparently that's the post rabies exposure price, getting the vaccine for a job or something is much less. So if you're working with bats and get it through work it's free, or if you get it privately it's pretty cheap but if you're out hiking and get tagged it's extremely painful.

              Anonymous

By privately you mean if it enters my home?

                Anonymous

No, if you go buy a rabies vaccine without getting tagged for a bat and then need the expensive prophylaxis drugs so you don't die.

                Anonymous

Getting bit by the creature. So if you do not get bit, go get the vaccine it appears to be relatively cheap but if you do get bit and then go for treatment it's extremely expensive.

                Anonymous

Oh okay thanks are they gonna ask to check or can I just tell them I want the vaccine as a safety precaution?

                Anonymous

It's unlikely that you've been bit and not noticed but they'll probably check you for open wounds and make an informed decision.

                Anonymous

Alright worse comes to worse and they charge me the expensive price I can just use that law that if I make under a certain income threshold the hospital has to wave fees up to a certain amount since they get a non charitable status and have to have a financial assistance plan
                > In the US, hospitals are required to help pay for your medical bills if you make under a certain amount of money (typically 200-300% of the Federal Poverty Level). This could potentially cover the entirety of your hospital bill.
