No, it isn't. There is no contest. The bear is bigger, heavier, stronger, and has claws. There's no contest. No fight. You're just feeding a gorilla to a bear.

it really depends. a bear can beat an untrained gorilla no problem. the real difference is the capacity for tactics and training. a trained bear really only can hit harder. a trained gorilla will understand distancing and thrown weapons, height and terrain advantage, trained to focus on weak spots like joints, eyes, or groin. maybe 1 in 1000 gorillas will ever reach that effectiveness to go 1v1 against a bear but it has that chance to.

Bear could break the gorillas neck with one paw swipe

If it comes down to biting the Gorilla has a much stronger bite. Brown bears max out in the 1200's while Silverbacks go north of 1300. If it is brute force we have no idea how durable a bear really is in regards to something physically harming it. I am talking about its neck/collarbone/ribs/spine etc.

There was a lowland male gorilla found with a massive python wrapped around its chest trying to kill it with its inches long fangs buried in its shoulder and the gorilla was just sitting there bored. I assume there was a struggle before but basically by the time the keepers found it, the gorilla had tired itself out or given up fighting since it could not really do anything. They tranq'd both and unravelled the snake and found superficial bite wounds and 0 damage to the gorillas bones in its arms back or chest. The gorilla literally was unaffected from the python death grip and was breathing without issue.

That same species of python has been observed killing lions the same way. Gorillas bones density and durability is much like their muscular make up - unparalleled in anything remotely its size. We have no such examples not including firearms to measure how strong the bones and resistant to damage a bear really is - say from an animal. Meanwhile Gorilla's are able to bend steel effortlessly and at the same time we have no idea how strong they really are since they almost never actually engage in combat and almost never to the death. Unlike chimps they are not attention seekers so we cannot even goad them with food and treat bribes to do stuff.

Gorilla bite force is a bit higher than a bears, but their mouth is also significantly smaller because bears have a muzzle while gorillas do not. A bear can just open it's mouth much, much wider than a gorilla can and therefore make much better use of it's bite.

Also, bears are so absurdly strong we've actually not been able to measure the upper limits of their strength. Partly this is due to different anatomy making it difficult to test, but also partly because every time a test was devised bears surpassed it without any real effort.

The gorilla has a stronger bite but would ultimately cause much less damage while biting. For starters the bear’s bite is only slightly less powerful, while also having much larger teeth and jaws. The way the bear’s neck attaches to its skull is also perfect for shaking to inflict horrific wounds on whatever it’s mauling, and they can generate enormous amounts of force with their neck muscles. Gorillas can’t.
        > The gorilla literally was unaffected from the python death grip and was breathing without issue.
If there were superficial bite marks from the python then it wasn’t a “massive python”. Their teeth aren’t even meant for causing damage anyways. The density of bones and muscles is irrelevant to whether or not the python can construct a prey item

          >and they can generate enormous amounts of force with their neck muscles
This is what people always forget about. If you've ever had guinea pigs you know how strong neck muscles in even little critters like that can be, imagine a 1000 lb bear throwing 2k lbs worth of force behind its bite. Zero contest, bear eviscerates the ape without even trying.

Bear could break the gorillas neck with one paw swipe

We know how much force a bear can produce roughly due to observing them with the intent to kill in nature. At the same time we know how durable, roughly, gorillas are. We do not know the opposites and there is no real way other than mistreatment to make a gorilla mad enough to want to hit or fight something with the intent to kill. We also have no way beyond torture to test the durability of a bear and there is no natural non bear equivalent in its habitat to stumble upon it naturally. With intent to kill the Gorilla - insofar unseen or recorded - might sink its fangs into the face of a bear and takes its eyes while holding the bears head and it could be mortally scratching and beating on the gorilla but it has never dealt with something that has the dexterity of an ape. A blind bear is as good as dead.

Who says the gorilla is going to allow its spine or head to be hit at all? We have 0 data on gorillas fighting an opponent to the death with intent to kill. Adolescent or older do not have natural predators.

      >Inb4 weight and size difference
Honey badgers frick up lions enough to chase an entire pride away - sometimes - or they get eaten - sometimes - If a bear false charged a gorilla who would in turn false charge maybe we would have an answer - until some oil billionaire funds it quite frankly no one has any idea and it could easily be tit for tat victories for each species in multiple fights.

Until then its just a "my dad can beat up your dad" Unless its a Kodiak bear then they win by default.

There’s at least one record of a leopard and a male gorilla killing each other in a fight, as well as a couple other records of leopards hunting them
