This. Blaming the death of all the megafauna in the northern hemisphere, when most of them still exist in the southern hemisphere is peak brainlet.

It's like blaming the triassic extinction on the dinosaurs killing everything rather than them just being generalised and small enough to adapt to the changes whilst their larger and more specialised competition died when the world they were specifically adapted for changed drastically and they couldn't evolve in time to adapt.

    >Polynesians arrived sometime before 1300, and all moa genera were soon driven to extinction by hunting and, to a lesser extent, by habitat reduction due to forest clearance. By 1445, all moa had become extinct, along with Haast's eagle, which had relied on them for food. Recent research using carbon-14 dating of middens strongly suggests that the events leading to extinction took less than a hundred years,[53] rather than a period of exploitation lasting several hundred years as previously hypothesised.

I really like blue whales but they're not as cool as large land animals. They don't have to support their own weight, they don't make complex movements and they get food by just swimming forward with their mouths open. For similar reasons a 100 meter tree doesn't impress us as much as a 12 meter tyrannosaurus.

Do coyotes count? Having to bring my 9 mil with me whenever I take my dogs to the nature preserve because the frickers are rolling 5 and 6 deep now.
Hell just the other night when I turned my floodlights on in the backyard to let them do their business had about 8 of them outside my fence sniffing around. And I'm in a residential area in Ohio mind you. Thankfully I'm not within the city limits and I was able to fire a couple shells from my shotgun into the dirt to run them off, but this is getting stupid. Even with the open season on them they still breed like rats.

      Anonymous

Coyotes aren't supposed to be in Ohio, you can thank the extirpation of the wolf in the Eastern half of America for that. Also no, megafauna by definition has to weigh over 100 pounds/46 kilos. The largest coyote (for now, unless they keep breeding with wolves) only weighs 75 pounds.

      >Speaking of which why megafauna wasn't exterminated from Africa?
The general explanation is that African megafauna coevolved with humans so they had more time to adapt.

      Anonymous

Humans, and for the record the genus Homo, evolved in Africa. Megafauna in Africa are used to (or outright hate) the presence of humans, hell in the past there were predatory species that appear to have regularly eaten proto-humans, like Crocodylus anthropophagus and various Dinofelis species. That all changed once homosexual erectus evolved, the first species to hunt big game.

homosexual erectus itself was responsible for the sudden decline of elephant species in the Middle East, and when they were reduced to only small pockets in Southeast Asia, other human species evolved in Europe and Asia to take their place. Megafauna suddenly didn't die out when Neanderthals existed from 40-400kya, because European and Asian megafauna were used to Neanderthals. They were not used to homosexual sapiens, who from 11-70kya, slowly dominated most megafauna across Eurasia (combined with climate change).

African megafauna evolved alongside us and therefore had more time to adapt to our collective wily israelitery.

You didn't give them guns, Arabs did. And even then, the only reason why poaching is a problem is because of European, Chinese, and Vietnamese bullshit. The Masaai, a traditional pastoralist culture, have been killing lions as a rite of passage for hundreds, possibly thousands of years, and yet that only became a problem once Europeans started going big game hunting all of the time in East Africa. Now they seldom kill lions due to falling populations, and they're about to be ethnically cleansed/removed from their homelands because big game hunters want their land as a natural reserve.

A single elephant can carve an absolutely horrific path of destruction when pissed off. A herd can royally frick up a village even worse. Now imagine not just having elephants capable of doing that but a bunch of other similarly sized or larger fauna species. Humans back then needed to kill to survive, most modern humans cry if the WiFi and water stop working for a few weeks. There’d be quite a few casualties before the bulk of humanity remembered guns are a thing now got its shit together.

The dodo was funny looking. This bird is just normal looking

I mean of course there's not quite a bird that looks like a dodo, I meant that a lot of the clout the dodo gets is from the fact that it's extinct, I'm sure that if it was alive we'd "be used to it" and it would be as popular as a something like a Kagu, maybe a bit more since it's so unique.
If you want a better example try with the Passenger pigeon. A lot of people want it back but I guarantee that if was around people would mostly disregard it as another kind of "rat with wings"

You don't go hiking in remote enough places to see them even if they did still exist right now.

    >tfw reading there used to be crocodiles everywhere post KT extinction, from land dwelling (Sebecidae, Planocraniidae, Mekosuchinae ), to ocean dwelling (Dyrosauridae), giants like Purrosaurus, existing in places like Japan (Toyotamaphimeia) and even all over the north hemisphere (alligator fossils were found even in Canada), and becasuse of the ice age they are all gone.

    Damn, it's really not fair.

      >tfw all the coolest animals went extinct
      >you can't see any megafauna when you go hiking

How did those big dawgs and dire wolves, smilodon and such die out so easily when North America is full of animals to eat.

      >killing enough bison to eat and maintain the ecosystem is the same as purposefully exterminating the vast majority of them

Yet they exterminated all the other megafauna, but atleast they spared the bisons.

Pinetree forests apparently much less productive than eocene bioms to feed the giants and predators specialized for large prey
