See, Lyviatan had upper teeth, they needed those, meanwhile extant sperm whales can even be healthy without those lower teeth because they just swallow their prey.

How do whales get so many scars even though they're always suspended in the middle of the sea?

        Anonymous

Because they hunt giant squids, which have barbed tentacles. There is no grand battle, but the squid hooks do leave their mark. You'll notice the scars are focused around the mouth - as opposed to scars on the back, which are likely caused by propellers (manatees are always covered in these).

Isn't it really dangerous to be in the water with them nearby? I their echolocation sounds were loud enough to shatter bones.

        Anonymous

Yes, it is tremendously dangerous to get that up close to a sperm-whale. A single click can knock you unconscious at about 15 meters while underwater and at such close proximity it could rupture blood vessels in your body and just outright kill you. Thankfully these homies are kinda smart enough and know that or just don't do it a lot in shallower water.

I hate humanity so much. To kill such a beautiful majestic creature that could have lived for over a hundred years or more, and for what? Oil? "Science"? The fricking meat?
I can't wait for the virus known as hairless apeism to one day be cured.

There's a fun cryptid theory on the subject
Actual mythic-sized giant squids were once common, they attacked whaling ships because they smelled like whale blood, they (mostly) died out because their food got hunted to extinction/near extinction, their flesh rotted away and the beaks sank to the ocean floor where they'll never be found, and a few survivors still roam the sightless abyss

Why would an animal be attracted to the blood of its primary predator that it can't eat?

              Anonymous

The theory would be that a legitimate kraken sized squid would turn the tables on the predatory sperm whales. Theoretically some Gigachad squid would breed and their offspring would have to run some kind of sea layer gauntlet chasing food and avoiding the sperm whales closer to the surface and in shallower water as the daddy squid essentially uses his offspring as bait to lure in sperm whales. When the mega squid dies it would be replaced by another highlander esque squid in choice territory. With the advent of whaling and the population collapse no squid were able to acquire that massive size due to lack of prey starving them to death before they become krakens. The hole in the theory is likely the fact that squid are cannibals and the biomass of the ocean rarely actually changes even if megafauna populations take a shit. They would probably just eat other squid.

What would a squid that big even sustain itself on that deep down? Whales aren’t exactly a constant food source and other large squid are too rare. Real giant and colossal squid are small enough to eat fish and common small squid, but a kaiju sized one wouldn’t have enough to eat

Dead whales are apparently difficult to move if you're not trying to eat them to extinction.

Who cares? The world has had 5 mass extinctions, and there is no rule saying that another creature can't cause another one. Instead of finding reason to feel bad about things, why don't you look forward to the new creatures that will have a chance to thrive once the cycle of life happens again and everything does our and starts again?

Wonder if hippos could evolve into a fully aquatic species

          Anonymous

Probably not because they live in rivers. Compare crocodiles to mosasaurs. One kept amphibious traits, the other lost them. Obvious as to why.
Seals and sealions are more likely to become fully aquatic, but probably not because dolphins and whales already fill the niche.
