if i throw fireworks at an intruding skunk, will that scare it away permanently?
i've hit him with an empty soda can and thrown a broom at him. he just jumps and goes back to eating.

Probably not since they just learn it doesn't hurt them. Only thing to do is take away the food or just let it eat. They're not harmful to property other than doing some digging in the ground for bugs.

Oh that's cute, I have a mother with babies she brought out once, I think 5 of them following her around very closely.
Of course they will enjoy cat food and they can eat a lot, more than a cat.

            a small update.
since i have accepted the skunks will just be here till they decide to leave, i went out saw one eating and mostly just ignored it while playing with my cats with a toy i have made for them(toy mouse on fishing pole). cast it over at the young skunk to see if he'd run, and after hissing a couple times he started chasing and playing with it.

will let that sit a couple days before playing with the cats with it again. doubt the skunk has anything, but i'd rather be certain.

my neighbor was letting in their cats and the neighborhood skunk followed them in and started eating food from their bowls with them, said she didn't notice for a few minutes. Should I attempt to make friends? He scratches at our back door sometimes begging for food.

I made friends with a gorgeous pure white skunk that would take walks with me when I closed up the chicken coop at night. It just started walking beside me from the porch to the coop and back, never bothered the chickens or did anything but walk by my side. I haven't seen it for a couple years and never thought to take a picture because I'm moronic and it was always dark. Miss you, skunk bro.

got a little nibbur like this eating cat food by my porch right now.
he's all black except for a little kippah of white on his head and the white line on his ~~*nose*~~.

so what does it mean if the skunk that's been coming around my yard is mostly black and the tip of its tail is more orange-ish than white?
i almost walked up to it the other day because i saw its tail and thought it was an opossum. only has a little while on its nose, rest of it is black, and then that weird tail.

      Anonymous

Mostly black would be normal too, they just vary a lot in coat color. Orangeish tail probably just dirty, my oldest white one is kind of yellow. Spends a long time in the dirt den so soil color probably dyes the fur a bit.

well, 90% of NC is red clay, so makes sense for a digging animal.
i gotta try putting some lemons or oranges around the yard, since citrus is supposed to deter them. i don't hate them, just don't want any little rabies vectors hanging around.

There's this article about one but again, they're not really rare , just undocumented.

She’s been posturing at the back door, so she clearly wants a third round.

Sucks they're illegal in most states or only with a permit. I guess the big issue for people is that there's no approved rabies vaccine for them, but there's one for ferrets that would probably work, but nobody has tested it enough and submitted for approval.

            I volunteer for testing

Can you play with them or pet them or will they brap you if you try?

Volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary that has them or go to a breeder. Though I don't approve of breeding them as they are wild animals and breeders tend to have the scent glands surgically removed. Personality can range wildly as they can be playful and loyal but also completely uncaring, lazy or aggressive so you need to know your skunk on an individual basis before handling them. Following general rules of handling animals (not startling them, appear unthreatening, give space, let them get to know you over the course of several days) will make sure that you won't get sprayed. Still might bite you after all that cause they're motherfrickers.

Nope northeast, white striped skunks are not uncommon in my experience, just not well documented on the internet.

They have few predators and are mostly unafraid of humans, wary at first but some are easily befriended.

They're easy to recognize as individuals due to their varied patterns and I think they can recognize humans as well, because they'll come to me but not my mom, they don't know her well and she's too pushy with animals, doesn't respect their space.

They'll brandish their ass at you as a warning first if you do something they don't like.

        Anonymous

They can, but won't if they know you and perceive it as just playing around. If you startle them they'll squirt, sort of like how a human instinctually makes a noise when startled.

          > If you startle them they'll squirt, sort of like how a human instinctually makes a noise when startled.
No, they just jump back a bit and sometimes take the spray stance but don't just spray out of surprise, I toss food at them and it lands next to them when they're not looking, they just startle for a second then go sniff it and pick it up. Never sprayed any food.

I can get close to some but not touch them yet. Haven't tried playing just feeding. They give lots of warning before spraying so it's not a big risk. Besides, it's only smells.
