Reptiloids.

What if the C-P extinction had not wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs? Sure, Late Cretaceous Eumaniraptors were far from being as smart as modern media makes them out to be. But the mammals of that time were also much more stupid than modern ones. Modern corvids, along with dolphins and chimpanzees, are the smartest animals on the planet after humans and show clear sprouts of intelligence. Thus, for diapsids it is not impossible to develop a powerful intellectual brain.
Moreover, the archosaurian brain shows even a higher potential than that of mammals due to the higher density of neurons. And classical theropods have a very important advantage over birds for the development of intelligence - developed functional forelimbs. Together with bipedal gait, this provides all the necessary starter kit for the development of an intelligent life form - a highly organized bipedal creature with functional arms and the potential to improve the brain. Vgh...
What a pity that the classic Eumaniraptorans extinct. With a huge degree of probability, the Earth could have received a developed civilization much earlier.

they were going extinct regardless, dinosaurs are inherently inferior to both birds and mammals.

      >to both birds and mammals
Birds ARE dinosaurs. And moreover - more basal than deinonychosaurs. They were just lucky to outlive their more progressive relatives because of their "atypicality".

That's why Dinosaurs came after mammals and dominated the world, suppressing the little rats literally until they went extinct?

you need to get there first, and raptors don't exactly have hands. the hands need to come before the brains.

      Raptors absolutely have hands.

I hate modern paleogays so god damned much. None of these fricking dinosaurs ever saw snow. The world was tropical from pole to pole, there were no ice caps and even during the long winter, I doubt they often got ANY snowfall. But the disease of HAVING to shove feathers on everything is used to depict the Mesozoic like it's modern fricking Canada.

    >non-avian dinosaurs
You mean Dinosaurs. The non-avian part is as extraneous as calling lungfish "non-human sarcopterygians".

It's just deviantart morons speculating only knowing the fact that there was a lineage of theropods with feathers

These people would guess that the world was an ice ball if they were in the future and found out long extinct coyotes had fur. Keeping the sun off your bare skin is extremely useful if you do not need the extra heat.

The problem is the children are now running the day care center. A long time ago when science was a white man's game, there were fricking standards. Now any old bullshit will do. Publish a paper, get some minor fame, destroy your field, and have everyone just agree with you on autopilot. I see this my own field. People will publish literally papers that say the totally opposite thing and everyone will just claim they don't disagree with each other, because to the average STEM midwit, every paper is truth.

I think an important step for humans wasnt necessarily bipedalism as it was tool usage, and complicated hands, which evolved in primates by being necessary for climbing. Might be neat to look into climbing dinos, idk that much about them or how common they were

It's hard to say but mammals would probably still have a shot to evolve and turn evolution around, just like what happened to crocodiles in the Triassic.

all things considered they were already so good at surviving without intelligence that they likely wouldn't waste the calories on it

humans only legitimately needed intelligence because primates are dogshit disgusting creatures that evolved for the sole purpose of being more entertaining for big cats to hunt

That's not how evolution works, moron.

        >be raptor
        >develop higher intelligence
        >have absolutely no edge over other raptors, you're a gigachad apex predator already
        >mutation disappears within a few generations because smarter raptors less likely to breed by fricking up trying new things
if something does not need a trait that requires more energy to maintain and makes them more error prone (intelligence does that. smart things ignore their instincts)... ...it will not evolve it. humans were able to evolve higher intelligence because apes are weak shit and hominids had the mutations that enabled it, like better thermoregulation and weaker jaw muscles. our ancestors were shit at life with weak bodies and blunt senses and stuck dealing with a new environment so the slightest increase in intelligence was extremely useful at just keeping them fed. less intelligent individuals were at a disadvantage. if we were wolves or something better adapted we wouldn't evolve it. ever. because we wouldn't need it to survive and the initial legs up would not help us survive any better.

suggesting that raptors, despite being amazing predators already, would finally evolve intelligence, is like suggesting that cougars will surely evolve hands so they can eventually figure out how to throw spears at elk. it would require that raptors would first degenerate into a weaker animal in a paradise-like setting without losing anything that would make intelligence useful, while gaining things that would enable more brain growth like dealing with heat better, and get promptly thrown back into the fire.

humans evolved from glorified tree shrews.

You can't really frick up tool usage or making traps, this will always give you an edge.

why would the Carboniferous-Permian extinction wipe out any dinosaurs, avian or otherwise?
