Dogs have been known to stay by their owner’s bodies after dying, so I doubt so.

OP confused dogs with pigs. Since that photo is of a beagle, the mistake is understandable.

I actually heard from someone who works with cadaver dogs that rookie dogs are instinctually deterred and hesitant of approaching dead human bodies. Acquaintance of mine found a dead body washed up on the beach once when he was walking his dog and supposedly the dog was acting super scared of it, too. Dogs have been our companions since forever so it seems very possible they’ve become hardwired to not like dead human bodies. I’m not convinced a normal pet dog will start eating a dead human right away, but only as a last resort if they are trapped with no food for days or weeks and no way to get out. Even humans will start to eat other humans when they’re out of all other options.

It isn’t uncommon for dogs to eat the dead/dying/gangrenous toes off of their diabetic owners while they’re passed out or just asleep. Fingers too occasionally. Or just chow down on human infants for similar instinctual reasons.

I once took a course from a pathologist who answered all the students' morbid questions.

According to this guy, the probability of a dog eating its dead owner is inversely proportional to the size of the dog. In other words, the larger the dog, the less likely it would do that.

On the other hand, small dogs and cats wouldn't hesitate to eat their people. They're just not smart enough to care.

sort of true. there was this german documentary once of a teen girl having a seizure and her Dachshund biting her face to the point she was basically a horribly injured acid victim after. the dog did not eat anything though. it just kept biting her, supposedly in an attempt to get her to "snap out of it". dog was euthanized for it and the girl had several reconstructive surgeries and was left disfigured...

I once knew a woman who lived alone with many MANY MANY cats. She was feeding a pallet (2000 lbs) of dry cat food every month.

She rolled her lawnmower over while mowing the ditch of her driveway and was pinned. It was mild early fall weather, and if she had had a cell phone, everything would have been ok (she didn't even break any bones), but she didn't.

Forensic Pathologists say she rolled her mower over 3 days before her neighbor called in the welfare check that discovered her, and that neighbor only called in that check because his farm was now overrun with hundreds of feral cats.

She was basically skeletonized, and judging from the distribution of the gore on the tractor, the sheriff said that either the cats were messily fighting over scraps of her or they started to eat her before she died or both.

      nightmareishly gruesome
why do people mow ditches anyway? how did she make money?

She was a home healthcare nurse who went to the homes of geriatrics to allow them to stay out of the nursing home, but she had retired. Two of her patients with no descendants had willed her their farm and a lot of money. The ditch she was mowing was the ditch alongside her driveway, not a road ditch that was in view of the public, you've gotta mow them if you don't want them to fill with brush and you don't want them to fill with brush or there'll be no where for you to push the snow when you plow your driveway.

I met her because I was working for the feed store selling her bulk catfood. She was normal when she started, and when it was clear her cat problem was accelerating out of control, I tried to get her in touch with people who would help trap and spay her cats, but by that point I think she was already too embarrassed with her living conditions (as a lone women on a farm with too many animals to care for, she also had horses), and tried to trap them herself. Of course someone who doesn't really know what they are doing can never actually trap a large population of feral cats, and someone who is willing to tolerate them to the levels they'd reached is never going to be willing to eliminate the ones that don't get trapped, so she never managed to spay even a tithe of the cats she was collecting. As her expenditures on cat food (she wasn't feeding shitty food either, the stuff she was buying was like 40 cents a pound at the best discount rate I could negotiate for her) continued to rise, her mental state deteriorated, but her checks were good, so she was never short money, only time and energy. Her neighbors ended up shooting hundreds of cats as their sought out new food monkeys, and the county had exterminators kill all of the ones that stayed at the farm.

It's a sad story, she was nice.

I understood that if you die the dog will wait until they can no longer stand starvation. Cats on the other hand might start eating you hours after death. Either way I'm completely okay with my dog/pet eating my body since I'm not really using it anymore. I'd appreciate it if my dog waited maybe a week max before eating me.

When dog cat arguments occur on Wauf it works like this
Cat side: no facts, repeats insults and statements incessantly, usually starts the shit to begin with and if they didnt they blame the dog no matter who really didn’t
Dog side: Half the facts, intellectually superior in every way but still taking the bait

Its like a literal cat and literal dog.

More like in minutes. Scientific studies have proven it. Most dogs wont eat their owners corpse until they're starving to death.
I remember reading an article from a man who was a body removal worker, and he talked about how cats owners faces were usually eaten off with an hour or two of death.
