How much work are Budgies compared to large dogs? I've had two throughout my life and want to know if they're comparable to having a budgie.

Great and intelligent pets. Need attention and care, you need to spend time with them. Loud. Will shit everywhere (some people claim they managed to potty train them to shit in designated areas), will chew your shit up. They are flock birds so you should get st least two (better one after another, so it would be easier to tame them), preferably same sex unless you want to deal with nesting and brooding. Overall pretty great, but don't just stuff them in a tiny cage and forget about them, they will look active and lively, but it will be out of boredom, loneliness and stress

Easy to take care of, very interactive pets, extremely social, cheap, easy to be cage free, easy to breed.

They're super small though but that's for the good. Smaller means your bird will be more active and playful.

I had one as a kid his name was Petey and everytime I took him out of the cage to fly around the house his eyes would change and he would make a racket you could tell how goddamn hapoy he was to be flying around.

one day someone opened the front door and he flew outside. I was devastated. then like 3 days later he was in the tree across the street from my hoyse and I walked over to it with his cage and flew right to it and climbed back inside. but man did his eyes look really crazy after that. like flying around the house was a shot of whizkey but this homie just got done doing 3 days of crack.

IMO its stupid that they are bred just to be trapped in cages. Pet industry and pet nutters are just sad. Other day I was googling for some info on Painted Bunting and one of the top suggestions from other peoples searches was "painted bunting for sale". wtf

My girlfriend is thinking about getting a budgie, she wants to know how loud they are. I've told her that all birds are loud and she should be prepared for that, but she seems to think that just one bird by itself won't be as loud.

      Anonymous

One budgie is actually louder than several.
A budgie’s whole existence revolves around constant socializing and always keeping track of their flock. This means making loud screeches to find its flock (you & your gf) every time it loses sight of you and suddenly realizes it is alone. Or is bored.

We just stopped at a local bird shop and saw some doves that looked nice, do you know how a dove would compare to a parakeet in terms of noise or overall difficulty caring for?

          Anonymous

Pigeons/doves make great pets but you should consider adopting from a rescue, pigeon people are very nice

          Anonymous

Doves are a lot quieter and generally easier to take care of. They don't need nearly as much stimulation as budgies and you can get away with feeding them a standard seed mix instead of having to deal with pellets and fresh fruits and vegetables like with budgies.
But they're also much less tameable than budgies. You won't be able to teach tricks to dove like you would with a budgie and they won't really play/interact much with you as much though they can still be very cuddly when you bond with them.

I think that budgies make better pets overall, but doves are a decent choice if you're looking for more of a low maintenance pet. Caring for a budgie is pretty similar to larger parrots in terms of effort.

            Anonymous

To clarify, I didn't mean that doves are low maintenance pets, just that they're lower maintenance than budgies.

Don't get a bird if you're looking for a pet that's more of a decoration than a pet.

My king pigeon is roaming around my kitchen right now playing with a cardboard box while my cat sleeps nearby. His favorite sunbeam is on the floor (it's noon) so he'll probably find that and go bask in it in a second. I think of him more like a cat than a bird. He's out most of the day. You can put a diaper on them (they call it pigeon pants) that you have to change every 2 hours, although I mainly just let him free roam in a space I don't mind getting a bit dirty and cleaning.

Pigeons can definitely learn some tricks, but they are a little more self-reliant in exchange for being lower maintenance. You can "train" them more by getting them to bond to you instead of a mate, but frankly I think this is cruel, and most pigeon/dove people recommend always pairing them (like rats). Ideally a male and female, and then you have to replace their eggs every time they lay. Or a female and a female, or a trio with one male, but never multiple males (they fight).

I think it's cruel because the pigeon will think you are his mate, and will be frustrated that you aren't doing the things you're supposed to do. My male is currently angry at me for not getting in his nest (his cage) with him every night to get busy laying eggs. He gets horny and angry at night and starts "suggesting" that I go do my job as a lady pigeon by nipping me while sitting on my shoulder. It seems stressful for him.

They are really beautiful, sweet, have big personalities, etc. Their lives will mostly revolve around each other, with you as a bonus, if you bond/pair them.

            >Don't get a bird if you're looking for a pet that's more of a decoration than a pet.
This is always true. Again I think of it more like a weird cat than a cage slave. I think it's insanely cruel to put any animal in a locked prison, especially one that likes to roam and have multiple favorite spots/nesting spaces.

    Cute little fellas
Don't keep them alone or clip their wings tho, these things might make it easier for them to bond with you, but they are also distressing to social birds like budgies.
They are bonding with you because they dont have a choice.
And no, a mirror is no replacement for actual companions, imagine spending all day making faces at a mirror because gigantic incomprehensible aliens are keeping you isolated from all other humans, that's some despair filled schizo shit.

      Anonymous

And the budgie is kept by you as a pet because it doesn't have a choice.
If keeping it by itself at first to make it bond with you easier will benefit both you and the bird in the long run.

Mixed budgie food + daily fruit and vegetables. I resort to pears and lettuce usually. Periodically I also give them specific vitamins for when they moult.
What vitamins/foods could I give them for this kind of thing?

          Anonymous

Not an expert but internet says vitamin A. So stuff like spinach, kale, carrots, pepper, lettuce.

What kind of vitamin supplements do you give them for their molts btw? One of mine always has some really heavy molts and I never thought about straight up giving vitamin supplements.

It's a multi-vit I was recommended, for any instance they go through a stressing period from weaning to moulting. I won't bother with the name because it's produced locally in my country.

You need to be persistent yet gentle. Are they still afraid of your hands? If so, or even if not, start trying to feed them treats from your hand, then simple commands like stepping up. You will know when they have accepted you in their flock when they start flying over to you to check out what you are doing. Remember to talk to them all the time as well so they can start learning what to say.

do you have two or more? then you've made it more difficult to tame them, it's easier if you have only one because then it only has you to bond with, but it's still possible with two or more you just have to be patient, try not to scare them or force them because you might break what little trust they have with you and it will be even more difficult then

        Anonymous

It's also animal abuse to seperate a flock bird from at least one partner. The stress is so high it likely shortens their life span.
Also even if it's legal in your shithole, in others it's not and 8 year old kids managed to 'tame' already bred and therefore not feral to begin with budgies for ages.

I you bought an abused from from a bird mill mass production that actually needs taming beyond opening the cage and sitting there with or without food until they feel bold enough to explore their new human, abusing it a bit further might not cause much additional harm though.

It really feels extremely bad when a pet passes away a little earlier than expected and then you realize that it is at least partly your fault.
I had a really beautiful friendly little budgie that would waddle on the ground and climb up my shirt for attention. He actually sought my company and followed me around. But I missed the early signs of a worm problem and did not deworm him when I bought him from the pet store. It really hurts thinking about how I failed the little guy. Vet couldn't do anything except told me to keep him in a temperature controlled room. He ended up dying in my hands as I bawled my eyes out. Rest in peace.

I think he was more predisposed to it. I try to feed a mix of pellets and seeds with vegis. He might have just ate the seeds since my other budgies are fine and healthy. I took him to the vet and he gave some stuff to help get his strength up so maybe he can get stronger and last. The vet said other than this problem his feathers were healthy with no signs of disease. He tried giving him parasite cleaners as well incase it was that but it wasn't it seems. I will let him run around some more today too. But I am pretty sure the end is near sadly.

Great pets. Can compete with dogs. Highly intelligent with distinct and wacky personalities. Hard to corral. Loud as FRICK. Do not get if you need quiet. You will never know silence again. Don't clip their wings, either. People will tell you it's necessary to get them used to hand-rearing, this isn't true. You can befriend them without disabling them. Flight is also great for exercise. I taught mine to free fly outdoors and come back when he got tired. Will shit on your walls, prepare for that.
    9/10 pet would recommend.

My family forgot the cage outside the night before and now after realizing the birds didn't explode from being outside they want to let them sleep outside every night

Seems to be better for the birds, they get to sleep and wake with the sun, and don't have to sometimes stay up till 12 at night in a bright room
we live in a tropical environment so no weather issues

Someone let three out. And recently there were nine flying outside together and I saw one feeding little babies in a hole in a telephone pole. It was really cute how they're little heads pop out.

There use to be a TON of them in certain parts of Florida years ago. They did great until a really bad cold snap it killed them off. I bet that was cooler than the brown shitbirds like sparrows

Sparrows are great, only poofter homosexuals like only brightly colored loud shit.

Birds really benefit from a solid day/night schedule and natural sun. Unfortunately I cannot leave my birds outside due to the freezing cold but sometimes if the weather is good I will carry the cage outside to get some sun.

They've been living outside since I made that post. Sometimes I worry though. I hope whatever disadvantages there are are outweighed by the benefits of the natural light.

Do you bring them in to let them out of the cage?

They are cute, funny and are great talkers. There isn't really anything to dislike about a budgie.

Some dumbfricks are breeding them for unhealthy physical characteristics that shorten their lifespans and quality of life. They're trying to recreate the abomination that is pugs, but with other species. Regular non-fancy budgies are the best. They also should be taken care of as if they were a big macaw in a tiny bird's body, so giving them lots of attention, fresh food, and space. Doing so grants the budgie-owner emotional immorality.

We should be breeding birds for high intelligence and longevity.

Sure, then they can suffer even more at the hands of shitty pet owners.

Is breeding for intelligence possible? Has anyone ever tried it with any animal?

I wish mine woud be easier to tame. I got them from a pet store and I think they're traumatised from being treated poorly.
