There's potential for a slightly shrunk Dunkleosteus, I'm pretty sure it's just the absolutely stupid looking image used in the paper that turned people off and the fact that everyone just copied that stupid looking reconstruction without questioning anything. The actual organs seem to be all bunched up in the front when going off of other placoderms that got extermely lucky in the preservation department.

It's just me, and I'm just baiting the morons that think paleo is a shit career.

irl paleontologists make more money than anyone here. They just don't describe dinosaurs or pterosaurs or fish or whatever the frick OP thinks they do.

Most of them are working for Exxon and making millions looking at plankton.

The very strong impression I've recieved from my O&G contacts is that a biostratigraphy specialization in Petroleum exploration is essentially a niche relic that was passed its prime 20 years ago. Is this wrong?

Obviously your geology skills are going to be immesnsely lucrative in mining and petroleum, but paleo? I doubt it.

          nope

outdated as frick and they'll still hire you.

          go figure.

core logging in general is stupid shit you don't need a BS or MS for, let alone a PhD. But companies keep right on hiring them anyways.

study maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and biology for 4 years just to write down the location of rock samples dug up each day.

              make millions.

I am aware, as I am being offered almost 6 figures with 0 experience to do OC on the Carlin trend.

It is a fairly simple job, but you neglect to mention that a huge part of your pay is to offset the all-consuming mining lifestyle. Hwever that extends out to all professions involved in mining, and there are certainly worse fates.

                >a huge part of your pay is to offset the all-consuming mining lifestyle
                Indeed.

and even with that, it's still almost impossible to get good help. Add to that the regular drug tests and no amount of money will lure people in.

I think a lot of paleontologists don't have much TO do but go over already-known things - so what else can you do in that position other than posit alternate possibilities, no matter how goofy or illogical they seem? Chonky light-weight predators, random exposed external air sacs, awkwardly condensed fish with spines that show the writer doesn't know how spines work, the list goes on.

We have a pretty solid idea of what most of these creatures looked and acted like (the "big ticket" ones anyway); but if you choose this as a formal career path you have to do SOMETHING with your time. So dumb shit it is.

it's actually core logging, thin sections, and biostratigraphy 99% of the time

      but thanks for playing.

Wauf has no clue what paleontologists do. Most of them just find gas, oil, and coal.

like if my job is describing Allosaurus skulls,
I can quit my job at any time and make more money in 5 years than you will in your entire life.

paleontologists describing dinosaurs make poverty wages

Paleontologists working for mining and energy are mostly millionaires, just like any other geologist in the field.

Pretty blatant samegayging old man. Also,
        >paleontologists make GREAT money...(if they're not doing actual paleo work

You have no idea what paleontology is, or what paleontologists do.

Most of them identify plankton for oil companies. That is real paleontology. Even if you don't like it. Especially if you don't like it.

              not what I said

why do you insist that paleontologists must be an authority just so you can try to tear them down for it?

does it make you feel better about your vast knowledge of anatomy and ecology? Or do you think anyone that knows anatomy or ecology is going to be impressed with your childish take?

It comes down to what the paleontologist wants

do you want fame and $40k-$200k per year in academia

or do you want NO fame and $175k-$10mm in petroleum exploration?

Most paleontologists obviously go for the money. If they want to publish papers, it's a side hobby.

      >If they want to publish papers, it's a side hobby.

      This is what I did.

I own a multimillion dollar mining contractor working for government and heavy industry. I'm fairly famous for it, and absurdly rich.

I've also published a handful of papers about theropod dinosaurs because why the frick not?

But at the end of the day I'll be remembered for the mining company I founded and ran, not the papers I published. There are many such cases. Vert paleo is usually just a side hobby for rich and successful men.
