At least get a smart dog, like a German Shepherd. I had one growing up that was fucking amazing and well trained. True to the breed, it didn't like strange dogs, but it never once attacked any other dog, but was extremely protective of us kids. The neighbors had pitbulls that kept getting out (surprise), and eventually ended in front of our house. The Shepherd, who we could leave on the porch with no leash because of how well trained he was got into a fight with the two pitbulls instantly. I think it saw them as a threat to my brother and I. My mom lost the tip of her finger saving that German Shepherd from the pits, who amazing survived with minor injuries, while the two pits were put down.
As an aside, Chihuahuas can be based. I had a Chihuahua mix at the time as well who was best friends with the giant German Shepherd, and the whole time the big German Shepherd was fighting both Pitbulls, the tiny Chihuahua was jumping in and out of the fight, tearing at their legs, then sprinting away each time a Pit snapped at him, then diving right back to assist the German Shepherd once they both turned their attention to it. My moms pitbull is going to kill somebody and i'm totally powerless to stop it until it snaps.
She has had it for about 2 years and the dog is now 3 years old.
