IT IS?! I was under the assumption it wasn't. Either way hunting in general is disgusting and only people I respect who hunt are people who EAT what they hunt and wear what they hunt.

so 99% of hunters? In fact, human hunters tend to eat more of a carcass than wolves.

knowing what cats are like, the idea of a cat the siz of a large german shepherd seems kinda bad.

i think lynx/maine coon is about the largest cat people can handle as a pet. anything else gets a bit laceration-y and severed artery-alike. by all means try to keep something larger, but don't moan when you have to call the amberlamps because tibbles stole a leg of lamb out the oven and then mauled you when you tried to take it back

    1. The states that allow the hunting of mountain lions have healthy populations, and so they give away a certain number of hunting tags every year to keep the population in check while also raising money for conservation.
    2. The meat tastes great.
    3. In states where the hunting of mountain lions is banned (e.g. California) the population is out of control, and there are more and more attacks on people and livestock.
    4. Also, just because there isn't a hunting season on them in places like California doesn't mean that they aren't killed. The states where cougar hunting is banned will hire animal control shooters to cull the mountain lions, leaving them to rot in the wilderness.

I think the hysteria over them is unwarranted. They’re a nuisance in certain areas and I’m fine with limited tags being given out if the population is healthy or they’re taking out livestock. The real fact is it’s fricking hard to hunt a mountain lion. Joe Blow isn’t getting a tag and bagging one unless he’s extremely lucky. I wouldn’t even bother unless I was with a professional with trained hounds. They just roam too far and are too elusive to walk around and think you’ll get one.

Governments don't want to scare people into not visiting national parks, state forests or prominent coastal destinations, especially tourists. For example, here in Australia, we have a lot of people who go swimming and are never seen again. A large number of these are almost certainly shark and/or crocodile attacks, but because there isn't a body, and the government doesn't want to scare away tourists, they are classified either as drownings or disappearances. This is the dirty little secret of animal attacks, both terrestrial and marine. it happens far more often than people want to admit.

The same book (Death in the Long Grass) has a chapter on crocodiles that really evokes the same feeling. Capstick himself shows particular disdain for them. Throughout the chapter, he describes about how he and a client hunted down a man-eating crocodile that had taken a woman. This is what one of Capstick's trackers said to him and his client after they went back to camp after witnessing the woman being dragged underwater.
              >"'There is nothing for it, Bwana,' he intoned with the exaggerated fatalism of the bush African. 'It has always been so. Always has ngwenya [crocodile] been waiting; always will he wait.'"
This is the final paragraph from the chapter, after they killed the crocodile:
              >"Mason and I sat, smoking slowly in the warm sun, watching the men skin the man-eater and place what they could find of the woman in a plastic bag. her head and one arm and shoulder were missing, as best I could tell. Somehow, the killing of the crocodile had felt anticlimactic, and I wondered if there wasn't something more to the episode than a woman being eaten and a croc being killed. No, I finally decided, it was exactly that simple. It had been going on for a million years and would continue as long as there were people, crocodiles, and water.
              >"But, at least, I thought on the walk back to camp, that's one ngwenya who won't be waiting."
