looks like we are getting closer to creating Tolkien's light emitting elf trees.

looks like we are getting closer to creating Tolkien's light emitting elf trees. One of the biotech companies has created a bioluminescent petunia that generates light by inserting a mushroom gene that glows when exposed to caffeic which the petunia produces as a metabolism biproduct

    >Gayass glowing flower
Who care re-create cenozoic fauna already or create whacky hybrid animals.

I swear if it wasn't for moronic ethicists and lack of funding then humanity would have mastered genetics already.

    >mushroom gene that glows when exposed to caffeic
This sentence makes no sense to me. A small section of a chromosome glows when exposed to caffeic acid? This makes no sense. Maybe they have a gene that encodes the production of some protein that glows when exposed to caffeic acid? Why caffeic acid, though? To my knowledge, the luminescence in fungi is caused by luciferins, which glow when they react with oxygen.

      >caffeic acid
It can function as a luciferin, luciferin isn't a single enzyme or closely related enzyme. Its an artificial category of enzymes that can be employed in bioluminescence

Luciferin is not an enzyme at all. You could tell it from the name if you had any idea what you were talking about.

Incidentally, for anyone confused like I was, I googled the original article and OP fricked everything up in his description. Caffeic acid is used as a substrate for synthesising luciferin, and then the resultant luciferin gives off light by reacting with oxygen.

I can tell it's probably not gonna work. By looking at the picture it's actually a hoax unfortunately enough. Moreso the people that are performing this do not realize that it's the black light that's causing them to "glow."

For the tree-huggers like me take a look at the picture I've provided. It dates back to about 10 years ago. It's about endangered plants.

There is a youtube video that shows them glowing without a blacklight though? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtlQSW-_WIQ

Same stupid fricking urge that kills everything nice and replaces it with shit.

You aren't actually articulating the source of your ire here. How are these any different from any other plant which has been cultivated for aesthetics? "What if we had a plant but it looked different" was the driving thought process behind the breeding of most decorative flowers.

You realize eugenics encompasses more than just le mean knotsea stuff you’re undoubtedly thinking about right? Some aspects of eugenics continue to this day, with voluntary euthanasia, gene editing, abortion of the disabled, and even sterilization. You should learn what words mean before offering a knee jerk reaction to them

Can it use that light for photosynthesis?

      Anonymous

I doubt it is strong enough. But photosynthesis is just electron capture and transport so I bet it would recapture some of the lost energy through it theoretically. There are some deep sea chlorophylls that can capture the light from magma in hydroelectric vents so it’s possible It’s not going to be a perpetual motion machine though.
