Did you ever make a tik orb?

I've been "training" the one that eats wet cat food. I put the food on a tray, inside the house, near a door open on the garden. I grab the hedgie and put him on the food. After feasting, he seemed to memorize the way out. Which is cute. I'll try to make a video of it, next time.
I also spotted this cool fat beetle. Call me an urbanite, but I think it's the first time I saw one like.

did OP ever get around to that tick orb?

      See

Yes. I experimented with a little orb earlier this year and it didn't quite work out right because the ticks didn't sprinkle as well as I hoped. It was more like an off-centered cluster. I'll try again in a couple of months when I'll have a jar full of fresh ticks.

But I'll make a new one later. Hopefully it will turn out better.

Why the frick do ticks exist? What benefits from their existence? Creatures can't exist in an ecosystem without benefitting it somehow or they get left behind, so what fricking purpose do they have on this earth?

Last night I saw this (female) hedgie. I thought she was dead since I haven't seen her for exactly one year. Glad to see her again! She weighs 710g.
Her left ear is strangely wrapped on itself. There were some hard stuff holding it closed, but I wasn't able to determine if that was skin inflamation or hardened dirt or something. I washed it for a while with a fabric soaked in war water and it was marginally but I didn't dare to force the ear open because it was likely to injure the hedgie.
After that, I found that one hedgie was trying to seduce her, but his mating ritual was pretty bad because he had shit smearing on his forehead. I guess GG Allin was reincarnated again.

It's been pretty rainy lately, and despite being good swimmers hedgies don't like to get soaked (or so I observed). The fleas population is booming. I'll see if I can snap a good picture for you.

      Cute hedgie

Wait a minute, why are you amassing an army of ticks potentially containing pathogens...

Strangely enough, the one that likes fries isn't gaining weight, but I'm not leaving moutains of fries anyway. And they're oven-fried, not deep-fried, which is only a bit better.

Not such how much it can qualify as personnalities since they're wild animals, but they react differently. When you approach, some try to run away, some cautiously stop and get ready to ball up. When picked up, some wait it out, others wiggle to break free. etc.
I don't think they're smart but since they're highly solitary animals it's hard to tell at my humble level.

We could, we used to have malaria in the U.S. and a intense campaign of insecticide use over a couple decades was sufficient to completely eradicate it. We could have kept going and wiped out a bunch of other diseases, likely most tick-borne ones, but the '60s happened and the public decided that it wasn't worth it to eradicate disease if some cute animals might die as collateral damage, so we stopped.

It's not even the fattest one.

You're doing good stuff OP, ticks are pure evil. I used to manage a pet store and we had various insecticide sprays intended for small animals (guinea pigs, mice, etc.) that I would think would be fine for use on hedgehogs too. Not sure how well they'd maintain effectiveness if they're outside getting rained on and all but it can't hurt. Something like pic related. Maybe a little bit in their ears would stay applied longer and at least force the ticks to bite them somewhere less unpleasant.

I picked up two hedgehogs who were snacking together. For some reason, the dark one decided to attack the bigger one, and it all went wrong: he tried to push his nose under the other hedgehog's belly and flip him around, but as he did that the hedgie immediatle balled up, trapping the attacker's face on his belly. It's a little complicated to explain and it was a pain to untangle those two.
We will live to see hedgehog-made horrors beyond our comprehension.

How do you remove ticks from wild animals properly? I want to get rid of some on the deer that're near me.

Simply use a regular tick hook. Granted, it's probably easier to pick up a hedgehog and make it stay still until the deticking is done.

Like what? I'm not aware of anything deer carry that spread to humans, except maybe very rarely rabies. But I'm pretty sure the last time any deer near my area were found with rabies was half a decade ago or more.

              Anonymous

Lyme disease that fricks you up so bad you cannot digest meat anymore is carried by ticks and is intended for deer. Humans can catch it from ticks as well.

                Anonymous

Oh, right. Yeah, that is a fair point, though if anything that just makes me want to kill ticks even more. Lyme clears up rapidly with antibiotics anyway, though I'm unsure about the meat digestion aspect.
I like deer too much to give up that easily though. I'll just have to use a lot of DEET.

                >Dunno how long the hedgehog anon spends removing ticks from hedgies
Depending on how many there are and how relaxed the hedgehog is, it takes from one to twenty minutes.

I really wouldn't know, but I assume it would take much longer indeed, since you would need to carefully check the whole animals (whereas ticks on hedgehogs can be easily spotted except for the larvas).

Deer are frickin big, I'd imagine it would take hours. I don't really know how you'd even get one to cooperate for that long.

                Anonymous

Nevermind. The ticks catch it from rodents and deer are immune to it. You aren't. The hedgie anon is also exposing himself to this risk

                Anonymous

I think I'm at a very tolerable risk. The ticks are already attached to the hedgehogs and can't disconnect to move to another potential host nearby.
Plus I thoroughly wash my hands afterwards everytime I handle one.

Where I grew up I never saw a tick in my life. When I was 25 I moved to where I live now where there are some ticks but not bad. Like I said I had never seen a tick before IRL and had only seen a couple pictures, but the first time I saw one crawling on me out of the corner of my eye I instantly knew what it was and immediately reacted to get it off of me as soon as possible. Ticks have to be one of those things that people are instinctively repulsed by.
Anyway godspeed OP. Never seen these weird fat ticks before but according to wikipedia we only have the reddish hard bodied ones where I live.

You serious? A tick is a small parasitic insect that will latch on to a (usually mammalian) host and consume their blood over a prolonged period of time, to the point where they swell up several times their normal body size.
They tend to be an issue because they very easily spread disease and are rather difficult to properly remove when they've been attached for too long.

Yes. I experimented with a little orb earlier this year and it didn't quite work out right because the ticks didn't sprinkle as well as I hoped. It was more like an off-centered cluster. I'll try again in a couple of months when I'll have a jar full of fresh ticks.

          >anon helping adorable animals while pulling off disgusting parasites and collecting them in jars for arts and crafts purposes
I love these threads. They tickle my autism in so many ways. Also on your tick orb. Try multiple layers. Tiny seed core wrapped in ticks that you dunk in resin before covering in ticks and then dunk in resin before covering in ticks. It’d be slower than one go but you might get better results. You could probably sell them on Etsy or something.

I thought about multiple layers, but I'm afraid there would be a clear mark between them. Same if I somehow make a first layer shaped like a kind of cradle and dump ticks in the middle.

I am glad you are back tick orb anon. These seem like less ticks than last year so far. Would it be due to it being early in the season or perhaps the impact of repeared removal?

I think it's because it's quite early in the season, the ticks population will explode in summer.

I think one of the most shocking things about this thread is how good you are at making little hats.
                clearly youve had practice

I assume it's sarcastic because I've never done this before. I just typed "origami hat" in Google image and folder paper as instructed.

Meanwhile, here's what I found on another one... not much, thankfully.

You are actually really good at making origami. I have had practice and I'm still fricking shit at making creases sharp.
