I've been feeling pretty loney lately. A relative suggested I get a dog. Where do you start? What do you need? I'm looking for a smallish dog because my house isn't big. Thanks.

PS. I want to get a therapy dog because I've heard they are good with people or it's a regular dog good enough?

Get a puppy at about 4 months old. My ex killed herself last year and it kind of broke me. Started having mental break downs at random moments.
After getting a puppy I was so preoccupied with cleaning up after he would piss and shit all over the carpet that there was no time to even think about that b***h. Plus he was so cute that just looking at him doing some dumb shit made me happy.
Modern men and women have existed for 200k years but we only domesticated dogs about 40k years ago and in that time dog became man's best friend. Really makes your think.

What can I do to build towards getting a dog someday?
What sucks is the breed I most want is a working breed, and every bit of information I find on it starts with "this dog is not for beginners." I dogsat one and did okay with feeding and walks, but it was already trained.

If you’re gonna love it no matter what - get a rescue (tending to a doggie will take your mind away from bad inner feels)

If you have extensive probs your can get pups that are easily trained for emotional support. Do research on that.
I have a “service dog” but in a general sense she isn’t bc she hates being out in public.

    Really depends on your need

Dogs are great, but people underestimate how much active work they take.
Do a bunch of research and make sure you 100% understand what you are taking on.

Despite popular culture and all the jokes and what not, cats show just as much affection and give you just as much love and attention as dogs do. They are just more subtle about it, but they will bond with you and be a friend for life.

Cats are a million times easier to keep as a pet, as they are far more independent.
If you feel like a dog is far too much work after your research, go to some pounds or rescues and find a kitten or young cat that just clicks with you.

Pets can absolutely help out loneliness.

Cats aren't really so independent as they have very few needs. They mostly sleep, stare into space, or mindlessly pace between points. There isn't a lot going on in that head, and if there was the cat wouldn't think that thinking was worth the effort.

Dogs are more independent naturally and training them is trying to mitigate that otherwise dogs do what they want. They can hunt their own food too, it's just looked down upon by game wardens because they need deer overpopulation to justify their jobs.

Cats are an invasive species almost everywhere. For the sake of the birds and small reptiles, dont get a cat. There is already enough.

Take in a old dog to get an understanding of a dog's needs with a calm dog who doesn't need too much physical exercise, you'll give the old dog a nice live's evening and gain experience in dog ownership

This might still work if the dogs have other dogs around.
Dogs are social animals, OP. In 99% of cases it's the wrong choice to get just one dog (unless, as said, someone is constantly home).

You have to be prepared to walk it twice a day, toilet train it and shit, and have at least $1000 set aside for veterinary emergencies.
You can't just neglect it and leave it to go insane on its own in the little prison cell of your home.
You're talking about a serious daily commitment without a break, with no fricking excuses, for a good 15 years or so.
If you can't commit to that just get a plush toy instead.

Don't get any sort of pet. No living creature should be enslaved for your entertainment. Just learn to live alone. You aren't entitled to company.

Why do women keep spouting this clown shit? It's as anthropologically wrong as you can get: humans are the most social species in the planet, people literally need a healthy and regular dose of socialization to not suffer from mental issues.

Because women are bad for society and if you were to plot it out they're lower than dogs.

Rescue an older dog, they are full of love to give as long as you treat them right. Any small size breed will be fine.

Make sure you know what you're getting into, dogs are a huge commitment more like buying a house than buying a TV
Dogs can be very needy, they need to be walked, as puppies they need to be trained
You need to vacuum their hair from the floor, brush their hair, feed them daily and give them water to drink
Heaven forbid they ever get seriously ill but that can be expensive
Now with that said dogs could change your life, they're great companions and they really help with loneliness

All lies. Dogs don’t need anything. I just let mine out when he wants out and then he comes back later that night. He’s never gotten into trouble and I don’t see any poop around so I suppose it’s fine. No walks no playing no nothing. If you need to do more and your dog is “needy” you’re just a bad dog owner.

          No, a chihuahua.

You know that's how dogs are kept in most of the non-western world right? Why would they be different from cats? You choose to make them different because you feel worse about letting a more expensive animal do its own thing but if you ask me all animals deserve freedom. If your dog is prone to attacking people when roaming free you should just let it be killed. That is how we domesticated animals and keep them domesticated.

do not get a dog as a crutch for your problems. go watch https://www.youtube.com/@lklencho to figure out what dog ownership looks like. if you do not already enjoy going outside and being active with your dog, chances are dogs are not for you. maybe go volunteer as a dog walker with your local shelter first to get a feeling for dogs. if dogs are for you, chances are you'll also find your dog there....

also, dogs are an additional money/time sink well beyond the 2-3hrs you need to spend time on their training every day. cleaning yourself and them after playtime, cleaning the house, brushing them and their teeth, vet visits, food prep, research....
