Is it possible to grow mushrooms on humans?

I know it's fiction but in Hannibal a guy induces coma in diabetic patients and then uses them as substrate to grow mushrooms while they are still alive. Theoretically is that possible? Is there a proper method to do it?

    >Diabetic coma
Easier to just give them HIV and let them go on with their lives.

Really fricking moronic writing, it amazes me. Why not simply say he was injecting them leishmania or some fictional parasite to grow "cheese" in them? By cheese I mean granulomas.

Because he's obsessed with Fungi. To him fungi is one being that understands everything. The intent isn't to kill, but to connect. That's is why he doesn't kill his victims. He wants to be understood and tries to connect with people through fungi.

I was mushroom hunting with my brothers today by the local wildlife park. The guys running the place seem to have stopped using woodchip mulch, which sucks because we probably wont get many mushrooms without it. I'm thinking of sneaking in my own stuff for later. I got to see a tiger for free though. They're MASSIVE.

There was a guy injecting psychedelic mushroom tea into his veins, and it started eating his blood cells, from what I remember. I doubt there would be fruiting bodies, even if said bodies developed the infected person would almost 100% be dead before it happened.

Most fungi don't like the heat we produce. Mammals don't get the same problem little creatures like ants do because of our hot hot blood.

really really fat people can have mold and rot growing on their body, which is just a fungus

No, fungal infections are very fatal once they get into the blood. There's no way it would colonize enough to produce fruit bodies without first killing the person. Even with immune suppression and near leathal doses of anti-inflammatories if their body didn't kill itself from fighting the infection the blood poisoning would.

How would you deal with the immune system, assuming you'd want to keep them alive?

        Anonymous

I'm not a biologist, but I suppose it depends. Some fungus does grow on the human body already, but so far as I know, no mushroom-producing fungus can actually subsist on living flesh, MAYBE if the person has a severely weakened or nonexistent immune system, but even then I'm not sure if the fungus would even be able to consume the flesh, more likely it would be outcompeted by bacteria, which is much more well equipped to handle such things.
        But again, not a biologist.

That's a shame. How about a dead one. Can you grow say Oyster mushrooms or any other edible mushroom on a dead human body? Can you make sure other organisms don't outcompete your mushroom?

Most edible fungi only grows on dead plants, so I doubt there would be any that infest dead bodies

So, only bad fungus grows on animals? And the good ones on plants?

            Anonymous

Unlikely you'd have to be practically mummified from dehydration then rehydrated with something the fungus likes to eat but wouldn't be more easily taken over by a mold or bacteria. So you're really working from supremely sterile conditions which is just downright impossible with human remains that aren't sealed with resin or something at that point it would be just a planter.

                Anonymous

Just molds as far as I know. There's molds that even stave off other molds while things ferment or age like you see with dried meats.

It's fiction dude, it's way more practical to just grow them inside a tray with some dirt and wood chips. Don't commit 1st degree murder for your weird fetish Anon, firstly fruiting body mushrooms aren't going to grow on living mammals, secondly your ass will get caught a week after someone disappears via all the traceable evidence you will leave behind, and you won't be able to jerk off alone because your cellmate Tyson "Big wiener" Samson will frick your butthole every night because he has the sex drive of a rabbit and the muscles of a silverback gorilla.
Just commission people on DeviantArt and Furaffinity (there're tons of furry fetish artists who will draw humans), this fetish isn't even that weird compared to the shit they normally draw so there's no shame. Just send them that pic as a reference and tell them what movie it's from, they'll hook you up.
A lifetime prison sentence isn't worth it, just spend the money on commissions and enjoy the free world, 35 to life is not worth the risk.
Unless you're planning on doing this to yourself, in which case, still don't do it and get commissions, you will probably end up easily killing yourself with some really nasty infections.
