I don't think Australian Shepherds are actually mistaken for Australian Cattle Dogs, but I can see how people might think that they are. Australian Cattle Dogs are known for being the most aggressive of all the Australian collie dog breeds, so I guess it's not too surprising that people would think that an Australian Shepherd would behave the same way.

            Anonymous

Australian shepherds are the most aggressive of all dogs considered "collies", since they were derived, in part, from australian cattle dogs, and the aggression is needed to drive stubborn cattle.

It's like a staffordshire fricked with a pitbull's buddy situation

              Anonymous

Australian Cattle Dogs are considered high-strung and may be prone to aggression if they are not properly trained and handled.

Aussies aren't derived from ACDs either.

                Anonymous

Yes, anon, they are. That's where they got the name. "Australian shepherds" were created from a stock of spanish, english, and australian herding dogs, and behaviorally they converge towards the ACD due to being designed for the same stock on the same terrain. Nippy, aggressive buttholes with a husky-like stubbornness streak.

Pic related is the australian australian shepherd and the closest thing to the aussie's ancestors today.

the diversity of (hot) takes on the Australian Shepherd on here is mind altering. ACD/Koolie/Kelpie being somehow related/similar performance wise to the AS is a new hot take to me. Previously, these breeds were said to by far outperform the lowly, dumb, disobedient and fat AS. in any case, pic related, the Proto-AS.

aggression: whe a mid sized dog is aggressive you'll know. an AS may give a dry bite when it's space is invaded perpetually and aggressively, like any dog. that's that. if it wanted to hurt you, you'd be in hospital. kids that were to be attacked by an AS would not end up with an accidental scrape but with a lost limb or dead like they do when a pibble gets them.

                Anonymous

                People confuse ACDd for ASs?
I’ve always been about adopting but then I adopted an ACD and I don’t want anything else I just want more.

Furthermore - they’re not aggressive. The most aggressive dog I ever met was a fricking shorkie - he was cute but bit my face 2x - once when I was just asleep
I don’t blame Harvey but I had a big talk with my brother whose the owner

                >once when I was just asleep

there is this german case from waaay back in ye olden DDR tymes where a girl was alone, had a seizure, and her Dachshund/Dackel/wiener hound bites her face off. the dog started licking her at the hands in order to wake her but as this didn't help, it slowly escalated to more "painful measures". really a sad case. the girl was disfigured. the dog was put down.

Superior ancestors can have inferior descendants, as evidenced by you thinking an aussie can't be dumb if its ancestors were smarter breeds.

I mean your parents were smart enough to breed and here you are making excuses for a genetically fricked collie mutt that's the #1 choice for dog karens

                >He's not aggressive or you would now it!
A restrained bite instinct is aggression. They are cattle nippers. They're meant to be aggressive.

I just know Harvey bit me bc he was in my bed and I moved - he didn’t like that.
I have a scar on my nose from him.
I remember other moments of me shuffling in bed and him snapping at me but I thought I was dreaming.
Not blaming dog but his teeth are crooked af so I’m pretty sure there is inbreeding going on with those designer pups

                >I wonder how they know these details…

her feet and legs were bitten too and she was scratched all over. her clothes also were ripped. I'm not saying all the dog wanted to do was "wake her up because it was afraid for her". certainly, at some point, when it had reached the face some form of hunting/killing instinct took over and it went to town on her...

in your case, if this isn't your dog but you somehow came to invade it's space it's only natural it would defend itself... I'd suggest people just ignore new dogs in their surroundings for the first few days so the dog can adjust. let them come to you, do not go to them. once everything is settled, you can start building a relationship at the dog's pace by luring them to you by being interesting/playfull or with toys or with food...

Idk. I don’t have much experience with small dogs. I just happened to spend my summer there to be at the beach. Dog latched on to me wouldn’t leave my side. Just showed aggressive behavior I’m not used to and popping him on the nose only escalated the attitude problem. Again I don’t blame dog.
