If you fail a pet or an animal, what can you do? What should you do? Please genuine, I am very lost.

Let me tell you a story.

When I was a child in first grade back I. 1986 I went downstairs to the garage one morning to see what the awful noise was. It was the family cat, Sophie, trapped under the garage door. It was a tough thing to see and I remember still bringing her upstairs it was clear that we had to have her put down. To this day I don’t understand how it happened. Very sad.

Point is, this shit may hurt like absolute hell right now but you will recover and move on to own other animals in a responsible manner.

    LISTEN UP.
EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
    STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF
my snake was getting old and her liver was probably inflamed which caused her to be unable to swallow the usual size of mice i'd give her. So I had to put her down the old fashioned way because i'm not paying for a massive surgery on a $30 corn snake and she couldn't cough it back up. I fricked up and something I cared about died. Yeah I had a real hard time about it but I'm here now and I'm okay. Having a self flagellation session accomplishes nothing. Be grateful you've never taken human lives with your bumbling buffoonery.

Accept that it happened and move on. Maybe re-evaluate how you treat any other pets in your care and see if you can improve their lives. There's nothing more to be done, it's unfortunate, tragic even, but simply feeling bad about it isn't going to make anything better.

Do something meaningful that could help you find some solace.
Are you good at drawing or can you play some instrument? Art could be a good way to channel your current feelings, maybe write a song or a poem.
Make an altar or create something meaningful in memory of this animal, something that in life would have made this pet feel loved.

sounds like you need time to feel the hurt
                cry about it, it helps

Even when a person dies we still need to move on. There is time to grieve sure, but we all need to move on eventually.

Is it okay to do work and put off sadness and regret? I saw remorse is not repentance which gave me some refuge from despair.

What would they want for you to do? I know that seems super abstract but what did you do that made them happy? Could you keep doing that somehow?

I don't know how to tell you this, but you did that. You held her still while the garage door closed on her, and then ran upstairs in a panic because you were scared. This is the part you suppressed. Then you ran down and freed her to see what you had done.

Lol, no, I’m pretty sure that’s wrong. I was asleep and woke up to the noise then went down 2 sets of stairs. Also the door had a sensor even back then so I’m still confused as to how it happened.
