I rescued this stray cat. She is usually very tame, but just a moment ago she bit me hard while I was petting her. I slapped her in the head and she ran away for a few minutes.
Now she is next to me again but she won't pay me any attention.
Why would she come near me if she is angry? Why did she bite me?

cats are like women. if you shower them with attention they avoid you. if you are able to act like you dont care theyll cling to you

Cats definitely recognize self defense, denying this is weird infantilization. My cat adores me but in the past attacked me like 5 times (total), I just slap the cat or something and it worked, it was years since last time.
Cats won't fear you if they can see the cause and effect, fear comes from unpredictability, ironically don't be a cat that holds a grudge for hours because it's going to be counterproductive

Ferals cats are literally the most likely pet to carry it, and only bats beat them when it comes to wild animals. Get tested OP, if not for rabies than atleast get tested for toxoplasmosis.

It has been said like 10 times by now but:
It's either over stimulation and normal, or she's in pain when you pet her in a specific spot.
Also don't hit your cat homosexual it's gonna get anxiety and attachment issues, it's not going to learn shit from it aside from avoiding you in the future.

She is a pretty girl. Some cats are just spicy. You will learn that their personalities vary wildly.

I will second other anons that hitting is not likely going to get you anywhere with your cat. Remain calm and remove your hand and maybe remove yourself or start to stand up so she jumps off of your lap.

Over time, you will start to understand each other better and these situations will occur less and less often.

Anon you may have a schizo cat. My mom likes to feed every stray cat that wanders up to our house, and one time she started feeding this cat that would be really nice one moment, but then all of a sudden go crazy biting and scratching her. Sometimes cats will lightly bite or poke you with their claws if they're playing, but they are able to stop themselves before they break the skin usually. That's how they naturally play with their siblings when they're kittens. If the cat went into full-on attack mode for no reason, it might just be crazy.

The causal relationship only works on dumb country bumpkin tier people too. Anyone with a higher IQ will instantly figure out that there's only one or two people that give a shit, they don't have any real authority outside of spanking, and it's trivial to just try harder not to get caught when the stakes are that low.

Dogs are often like this. Border collies are smart, they don't need a lot of punishment. If you punish them too hard they just start avoiding you in particular and do their best to get away until they end up completely and utterly broken.

Im a loudmouth extrovert racist, dad was a drunk and him finding out was never a biggie since he drank the electrical bill money. Mom would throw a fit when I break a window or get failing grades
My parents alway beg me to visit, I yell at them when they frickup - but I was like this since I was born, they did not hit me after 12 as they knew I would hit back no matter who they are
In the end when I yell I yell because I care, paid to fix their roof, when I visit we all go sometimes to visit places mom did not have a chance to see because she worked alot, get them checked privately in clinics, they both make bunch of home made food and pastry for me
My brother is the soft spoken lazy one since he was born
I am one that tell people to go frick themselves, that was stupid, no this shit does not fit, no you are not thin, but will try thier best to help. And now Im getting more money in a month then mom did in 10 months
I guess Im the dominant one.

She may have her back to you or, ignore you to show that she wants to be near you but, doesn't want you to get too close.

Cats don't understand being hit. Even dogs are mostly confused by physical violence but, dogs are much more social and will be likely to associate the response to their behavior. A cat is far more likely to be confused and shit or piss outside of their litter box or run away because you made them anxious and they feel unsafe.

Anyway, she bit you because she got really excited by the petting. She decided she had enough and trusted you enough to chomp ya. That's how cats communicate. Some cats are more likely to do this behavior than others. Sometimes cats will vocalize or move in a specific way and you'll know she's saying "I'm getting excited!" and you'll know to stop petting her. It's one of the fun things cat owners get to learn.

People might be upset by your story but, I understand what it's like to rescue a cat. It's a lot of learning all at once and, unlearning some things you thought you knew about cats. I think it's really nice of you to take her in and asking about her shows that you care.

Cats literally “hit” eachother and enforce a chain of command/hierarchy based on which cat is the most “in charge”. Cats absolutely understand simple correction and there’s no need to lie that they don’t. They’re just capricious creatures. They’ll resent it maybe but it’ll be understood.
