I went to a local market the other day and saw some fricking huge pigeons the size of large roosters and geese. What species were they?

They were originally domesticated animals, not really pets but they can bond well with humans.

I wouldn't recommend birds in general, they are way too loud and take a lot of care.

I'm reality all you need as pets is a dog / cat. The wielder animals you get the more stress you are under since its much harder to know what's right.

    Stick with dogs anon

You could literally grab a pigeon from the ground outside and make it a pet and it would do fine since those pigeons are feral domestic pigeons anyway.

All I can say from my experience of owning pigeons is that given a few generations and your pigeons will turn into that pigeon from your pic.

You need to be really careful with the breeding.

They are very smart and can be good pets and good friends. There are several pigeon rescues throughout the united states, also pigeon breeders you could buy a squab from. Many beautiful colors and types. The downside is they shit a lot, have a lot of dandruff, and throw their food everywhere. They are messy.

pigeons were originally bred for human companionship so they're naturally good pets, they usually spend their entire lives in one area so make sure to pick one up as a baby and not off the street. The reason there are so many pigeons in cities is because they're dependant on us to keep them alive, and humanity turned their backs on them once they stopped being useful. You should also read up on ownership on other websites for the specifics.

Thanks, anons! I'll see if there are any pigeon breeders in my area.

I'm pretty sure city pigeons roam to other areas too. Because different pigeons keep coming to my house all the time

Isn't the reason there are so many in cities the fact that they thrive the best in vertical areas with cliffs and stuff?

The populations were established from domesticated animals generally, being decently adapted to cities just let them thrive.

I really like pigeons and wish I could have one. Are they good pets?

They are domesticated animals unlike most pet birds and can bond with humans surprisingly well by comparison but they're pretty fricking dumb. They call all the time, need a very large space to fly (and shit) around in, can cause lung irritation from the shit/feather dust if you don't clean that large space regularly. They're relatively quiet as far as pet birds go but can be very incessant with whatever coo noise they make. If you want them to be a proper bonded pet you need to spend a lot of time with them on a daily basis and their primary method of demonstrating how much they like you is by fricking your hand. I love the little bastards personally and they're much less of a hassle than a parrot but still fairly involved.

        Yes.
They're European Rock Doves that roost on cliff faces so skyscrapers feel very natural to them.
They were brought over with immigrants for an easy source of meat in large cities where chickens were difficult to raise due to space constraints. Virtually every apartment building used to have a pigeon roost on the roof.

City pigeons are feral domesticated pigeons. Their closest wild relatives are rock pigeons. Kind of like dogs and wolves.
