I need help choosing a dog.

I just bought a house with an acre of land and want to get a dog, but I'm having a hard time choosing a breed I like. My family has had dogs but not very trainable breeds, so I want something I can train to do tricks and fetch, can put up with a decent amount of exercise since I walk a few miles every day, long lived/inherently decent health for the breed, decently responsible off leash, can chill out at the end of the day and cuddle up on the couch, preferably short or low maintenance coat and prick ears are the only really aesthetics I care about.

Also I live alone for now, work 8hrs a day but only 2 miles from home so I come home for lunch, but otherwise the dog wont be supervised during that time, I am going to fence in the whole yard shortly so the dog won't be locked in the house all day.

I've had friends recommend gsd's since they hit a lot of those points, but they are one of the worst shedders and don't have the longest life spans, not to mention the horrible sloped spines and hip issues. Another friend has three huskies and, could hook me up with his breeder, they are supper cuddly but aren't into fetching or any of that and are terrible off leash.

I'm kind of lost as to which direction to go so I could use all of your 2 cents.

German shepherds are intelligent and easily trainable they’re also velcro dogs so you never have to worry about your GSD taking off randomly and abandoning you to go kill the neighbors cat/chickens like a shit husky
their loyalty can’t be matched and their dedication to their family is something to admire and you never have to worry about strangers again people take a look at your GSD and don’t wanna frick with you especially if trained to do a scary bark at strangers
i personally have a GSD and she is my world she’s nondestructive and quiet only barks when she feels something is sketchy and super social once she knows someone is good she will lay down her life for you

Just whatever you do be fricking careful about getting a shelter GSD because they can come with a lot of issues i only recommend you get one if you have experience with the breed and training out bad behavior

I frequently dog sit a couple of labs. The owner has 50 acres so I've never put a leash on them. One of them is a 4 month old puppy, Incredibly obedient and quiet for a pup. She can be a bit naughty but learns quick. The older dog is amazing, he always listens when I call him over, if I tell him to not touch something or not go somewhere he also listens, I've only ever heard him growl once, and that was because the puppy tried to bite his face.
The main issue with labs is they seem to have a slightly shorter lifespan and are prone to tumors, but are great dogs overall. Most of these people like huskies because they are gross animal frickers.

      Anonymous

Ironic you would say that because labs are larger and way more eager to please, and for the longest time the only certified dogfricker on Wauf was the owner of a female black lab.

Labs are THE dog that is most likely to eat shit. Literally. They're so food motivated it's like they have no personality but "listen" (because they're so desperate for food they'll jump off a cliff hoping this time you'll give them some).

Hmm. Strange niche. You might want to make a concession here or there. Sounds like you would do well with a bird dog with a decent sized yard and they typically have shorter coats and usually love fetch (outside of setters they are like 1/3 but have long coats anyway). Ever considered a Britt? Not a crazy long coat (short hair tends to stick much more and needs in stuff worse than medium hair that lays on top) that doesn’t shed too bad, love fetch, friendly and trainable little critters, and a pleasure to look at imo.

Went to the park and this lady had one of these dogs. Seemed like a nice dog.

But apparently it didnt think I was nice, because it ran up to me and barked. Very agressive. I guess I look scary because I'm tall? I was just walking the park trail.

Any dog you get that will work well in that environment will also need a tall fence with deeply embedded anti-digging defenses. That said, a border collie is highly trainable and would love to have an acre to explore. Make sure to leave lots of puzzles for him while you're gone.

Their bloodlines have accumulate genetic disorders unironically named after them in pursuit of peak herding performance beyond what any farm asked for (if anything the champion dogs are on too much crack for most farmers) and now it's all pointless since we can herd sheep in real world conditions using fricking drones. Oh and australian shepherds are the fricking worst. They're everything wrong with collies genetically rolled into one and anyone breeding a dog carrying merle, bobtail, MDR, epilepsy, collie collapse disorder, or collie eye anomaly should be shot. Meanwhile aussie breeders are constantly flipping their shit over disqualifying colors and ears, not stopping to notice that if an unsanctioned breeding between two random aussies might in severely ill, miscarried, and stillborn pups, maybe you need to fix your fricking dogs!

the problem imo with gsd's is navigating all of the health issues, such high rates of dogs with joint issues I'd really have to trust that the breeder took good care to breed for health which doesn't seem to be the trend with gsd's

notice that shepherds, huskies, malamutes are in the TENANT OCCUPIED category they probably had too many claims from rentals where dogs tore the place up or were territorial to new renters in the cases of some of the other breeds.

                Anonymous

Oh yes, malamutes and huskies really do not take well to meeting strange adult dogs and need very slow and careful introductions. It would be called dog aggression but it's a very conditional and slowly escalating behavior instead of reactivity going into an attack the same minute. At first they really try to maintain their distance and warn the other dogs off. At dog parks, huskies appear awkward and antisocial, not interested in really engaging with most dogs. They might play half assedly and then leave and hide away from all the action. And if the other dog doesn't take the hint they snarl and snap to try and get them to "frick off right now", but won't go further than that, and as the days drag on, with the two dogs trapped together because their owner hopes they'll be best friends, the sled dog gets sicker and sicker of this strange homosexual trying to muscle its way into their pack and remembers that they have one of the strongest bites of all dogs. A lot of other breeds also don't seem to "get" huskies and malamutes. The sled dogs have more adult body language and manners, most dogs are more playful and in your face, which really pisses off the malamute or whatever and confuses the lab or whatever.

Sometimes they run into another husky or a dog that "gets it" (usually another serious business working breed that's more wolflike) and they play fight while making the most horrifying noises and acting like they are actively trying to kill each other, and then they're best friends.

If you ever get on with another dog, make sure at least one is a puppy, or another sled dog.

              >Most of them were ruined by attack/protection dog breeding, just GSDs on crack now

the BS, kek, is 4 breeds. the Malinois may be at times problematic but if you can handle a well bred hunting dog like a Weimaraner, Viszla, BGSH, Cur etc. you can handle a regular Malinois. as with all dogs, you need to research the parents and breeder and see what's what. but no, the average Mal will not kill you... t's a great dog for the dedicated dog fancier and you will not be getting a crazy Mondioring IPSC dog by accident without looking for one anyway...

but ofc there a psychopath breeders, as always. jsut recently I canme across a breeder's description of what he does that said, literally, he does not care for "good nerves" because that usually gets in the way of drive and drive was his foremost drive. kek. his dogs are optimized tools and supposed to function then and there, not accessories for polite society. sounded to me like a major COPE as his line was just not healthy to function so he came up with a walltext to console himself...

the problem imo with gsd's is navigating all of the health issues, such high rates of dogs with joint issues I'd really have to trust that the breeder took good care to breed for health which doesn't seem to be the trend with gsd's

they like to bite but that is a feature allowing you to train them better. any dog with drive, of whatever sort, can be mre easily trained to be bomb proof using that exact drive compared to a dog that really can not reliably be channeled.

They are severely overbred and their health is suffering. FYI there are no genetic tests for epilepsy, you simply neuter the dog, ALL its siblings, and its parents. Few collie breeders are willing. Once a bloodlibe is overbred this shit shows up more and more - sooner or later the only cure is the immediate termination of the entire bloodline. Imagine that, nearly every single australian shepherd sterilized, the breed considered over for being in violation of "torture breeding" laws. Collie collapse disorder is itself a form of epilepsy.

I do not in any way condone the ownership and breeding of collies. And going off your ever recognizable typing style and reused images - aren't you that "dead aussie fgt" who "ofc..." bred his own dysgenic "UNTERHUND" dog "..." and got it killed?

There's a huge difference between border collie like herding mutts and the inbred neurotic results of trialshomosexualry and benchhomosexualry today. Breedhomosexualry gets it all wrong unless you want to redefine breed. It's the bloodline, not the breed.

Most border collies you can find outside of europe are going to be the result of 100 generations of cousin fricking and certifiably autistic. This is also true of GSDs. People go out of their way to import european puppies to get a healthier, longer lived dog. Euros get the good ones. It's the opposite with breeds of american origin. The US gets more genetic diversity and true working mutts and europe gets show dogs unless they want to import, so we get 17 year old malamutes and europe gets some ugly husky mastiff things that fall apart at 10.

      t. literally trains ranch dogs, the only ones not completely broken by genetic health issues before they graciously expire are the ones which have been mixed with something else within 2 generations
