My guess is going to be Noway rats introduced in it’s ecosystem. Same way that the black native European rat is almost extinct

The black rat isn't native in Europe, no true rat species is.

Maybe pacific islanders should mourn them, given it was guano that first got the US horny for conquering them all.

What makes it special compared to every other rodent in the world?

You don't understand. They were very slightly different looking rats with obscure names.

Sounds like it can be easily fixed by selectively breeding for a look alike.

A look alike does not help. It’s not the same thing, it won’t act the same

What ways do they act different? Why didn't you mention the difference earlier when I asked what made them special?

nta but to answer: it's a rodent - all rodents act exactly the same with the tiniest bit of differences, such as specializing on a particular seed or hibernating longer. You can tell by looking at them - the rice rat isn't special and its niche can be occupied by any other mouse or rat introduced to the eco system. All are brown or grey, dig burrows or live in dead trees and eat seeds. gays just keep seething because le ebin cute face and eyes

Alright, point out what makes the burrowing, wood chewing and territorial behaviour of a beaver different from a house mouse.
They're all different sized rats with special appetites.

Nobody here is talking about specialized beavers. We're talking about a common rat with a cute face.
