How much do I feed my new dog?

We have 2 types of food, kibble says on the box and is pretty straightforward but I don't know if that applies for that food only or if it applies to other foods as well. We have páté for it as well which looks to have better ingredients but there's 0 specifications about breeds, it basically just says feed your adult dog 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 tins a day. It's a 2 year old Pomeranian about 5 or 6 pounds and so far we've been giving her 30kg of páté for each meal 3 times a day and treats, is that a good amount, too much, too little?

Just feed the damn dog, most dogs are self-aware enough to stop eating their food when they get full. Y dog has been free fed her whole life and only got fat once when she was sneaking the cat's kibble.

What if she's not self-aware, I don't want to overfeed or underfeed her.

I see you have never met a lab or a beagle

The feeling of fullness is an instinctive mechanism controlled by well understood genes, as is the metabolism’s tendency to burn energy or store fat. The only way to self moderate is to understand calorie counting unless the dog is just naturally peckish. Some breeds are disordered and excessively hungry. Humans have the same problem, but we blame it on them because they are expected to know what a calorie is and how to add them up to 2500.

My dog IS a lab, she only has an eating problem with human food and cat kibble, neither of which she has direct access to for obvious reasons

No they aren't, they'll just eat until they vomit and then eat the vomit.

If you have a moron dog maybe, I have never had that problem.

Dogs can’t count calories. Frick, some humans can’t or struggle to. Hunger is entirely instinct.

People did a better job of not becoming fat fricks before calories were even a thing. Not becoming a fat frick is an instinct, and if your dog (or you) can't stop themselves without counting calories, then it (or you) are a failure

              >run out of money? that's nonsense dude i'll just make $25 payments for life
              >cre

dogs are used to eating much larger volumes than are necessary when it comes to kibble, especially high quality kibble. a bone will fill a dog up far more than a cup of kibble. idc how much it "swells up from water in their stomach" its still not the same thing, plus they lack the mental stimulation of actually chewing on a real meal. all of this adds up to overweight dogs with no self control, because we're feeding them something that they're simply not made for, so we HAVE to control the amount.

    >30kg of páté for each meal
    are you stupid?

im gonna assume you mean 30g

"Give your dog one 3 oz can per 3 - 3½ pounds of body weight daily, divided into two or more meals."

you said shes about 9lbs, so 27g of wet food daily.

    https://vetcalculators.com/calories.html

do some math and use your head, its really not hard to google basics like this. if the pate youre giving her has literally no feeding info on the back then its garbage, dont feed it to her.

      example

      9lb dog
      good body condition
eating cesar beef classic pate (100g per tin)

      3.5 a day.

IF YOURE FEEEDING DRY FOOD TOO
you have to split those calories

so do the math for your dry food
decide how much wet and how much dry theyre gonna get (50/50, 40/60 etc) and then give the right amount of COMBINED calories.

You know your stuff and in truth yes I probably am an idiot, my brain is mashed with this and it's my first real time owning a dog. is 30g of páté 3 times a day + treats good for a 2 year old Pomeranian un-neutered? The previous owner was feeding them about the same roughly I think, except they were feeding her on just Baker's dry food, I've been feeding her on páté the past few days. I could half and half it though if you think that's better.
I'll look in to a lot more thoroughly now though.

sorry for being a c**t anon im having a bad day

          >is 30g of páté 3 times a day + treats good for a 2 year old Pomeranian un-neutered?

Depends on the pate, you really need to tell us specifically what brand and how many calories are in it. Dry food is cheaper and some argue it's good for dogs' teeth but that's bullshit because most dogs just swallow their food whole. If you want to take care of their teeth go look here: http://www.vohc.org/accepted_products_dogs.html
Pick any treat/chew on that list for dental health.

          Good luck with your doggo

I did mean grams, I was just typing fast and am very tired, sorry. Appreciate your responses though.

Look up a daily calorie requirements chart for dogs. A good one will have different columns for age, if intact or not, and for weight loss or gain. Then, take whatever number of calories are recommended for your dog’s weight and compare that to whatever is listed on the tin of pate.

Looking in to this as well, thank you.
