how long is appropriate from finding a stray dog and then just saying this is my dog now? this girl showed up at my door nearly a month ago and i did the chip check, post on facebook group things but she seemed a little too healthy (though very skinny) and a little too expensive of a breed just to be abandoned. i ask because if she's going to stay my dog i'm getting her fixed and she's i'm 99% sure a pure-blood treeing walker coon hound which is a very expensive breed and i don't want to get in trouble for neutering her if her owner pops up.

I found this resource for you king. It's just general legal US advice, if you're situated somewhere else or think your laws may differ, do your own research for resources like this to apply to you.
    TL;DR:
    >the law does not truly determine who the dog belongs to now, it's possible the former owner will pop out in some months or years and try to get the dog back
    >you could give it to a shelter who have a legal holding time after which the dog belongs to them (you do not have this as a private person) then adopt the dog from them to officially own it, with the caveeat that they might put the dog down (I dont know how trigger happy shelters are where you're at) or give it to someone else if they dont give a frick

As for my personal opinion, I'm almost sure that if the dog isn't chipped, whoever lost it has no actual real legal way to prove it's his dog, which however wont save you from him giving you legal troubles over it.

Most shelters will neuter dogs which causes more disease than it prevents especially if they are under 2 years of age

I would just keep the dog and check the local papers for a couple weeks/months for people searching their dog.
If nothing popped up, I'd keep the dog, so much is certain. If they're too lazy to do ads and actively search, they don't deserve the dog anyways.

Not OP btw but yeah, would keep the dog if no one is looking for it and it likes me.

      this
hound dogs are extremely common in shelters because hunters will dump them in the woods once the season is over. it would be more expensive to feed them than it would be to just buy another one next year

she's just a baby though. you can tell by her teeth and foot size she's pretty young. maybe 4-6 months old. her adult teeth are still growing all the way in with gaps in the gums. if someone did just ditch her i don't know how much of a monster they could have been. she wasn't house trained but it took a WEEK to get her house trained. 1 week. and she is the most loving dog i have ever seen. she just want's to cuddle 24/7. i get annoyed sometimes but she is such a sweetheart. but frick it i think you guys are right. my dog now.

Dont neuter. Its bad for them. Get an ovary sparing spay. No blood, no pyo.

huh i did not know that was an option. i just went down a rabbit hole about it. my big thing is pet population, i go to the dog parks a lot with all 3 dogs and random dogs are going to random dog, so sounds like a good idea. thanks, anon. have a picture of my new little dog with my big old man frank.

If you don't spay it would just mean that 2-4 weeks of the year you dont go to the dog park with her, and you avoid a surgery.

keep a paper trail of your vet visits and bills, you checking for a chip, you telling the cops/the local shelters/county vet, you going on FB etc.

you should be able to prove that you did a reasonable effort trying to find the owners.

you should be able to show that you spent a reasonable amount of money on the dog.

I'm not sure this will hold up in court if they ever want the dog back though as far as ownership goes but I do not think you would be liable for damages when you get the dog fixed. which btw is just a dumb idea. active and healthy dogs should stay intact.
