How do you guys feel about the likely inevitable ai robots dogs and cats?
People keep talking about ai sex robots.
But obviously dogs and cats will likely be much more attainable earlier.
I'm wondering what's /vt/s opinion on ai robot pets?
Like let's say they become so advance, they look and feel just like a dog and cat, and even behaves just like one. The added benefit is they don't get sick/die/eat/shit.
Would you be welcoming to having an ai pet? Or would their lack of soul still make you want to have real flesh and blood pets?

More likely we'll see genetically engineered designer pets before that.

i don't think about it because something that comes even close to fully replicating a pet dog isn't happening in our lifetimes. things like pic related are certainly very impressive with how far we've come in terms of hardware, but that's about it. it's a dumb box. you still need to write shit in python for it. and as far as i'm concerned, the computation needed to get AGI like HAL isn't happening on silicon.

same thing with sex bots. stop dreaming/waiting for it, it's just not happening in our lifetime.

Have you guys seen the new one Marscat? I got an ad for this and just look at the slow way it moves. An arthritic old cat could beat this in a race. It'll be a long time before this can match a real cat. Aibo has neat movement though

If they're almost indistinguishable from a real animal, you're just trading the SOVL of a real dog for the convience of no needs beyond hardware service (and normalgays will still neglect this).

But the real advantage of android pets is the option to go full degenerate and build a canine wife with human-level intelligence.

How would that be degenerate if you're making more human like than real women?

It would be impossible for a replica to be more "real" than the real thing it's copying. If its behavior diverges from what it's recreating and there is a measurable difference between robot behavior and woman behavior, then the robots are not convincingly "women".

The point of pets is that they are still individual lives. Souls and all that. If AI can fully simulate them it can fully simulate us and we are so screwed that the spiritual authenticity of your dog will be the least of your worries.

idk i feel like the ai and the looks would have to be incredibly advanced for people not to just want real animals, like you can keep regular ones in kindergartens maybe but it'll be obvious it's not an animal elsewhere
and besides we got a lot of animals at pounds and as strays so i imagine the population issues there would get worse
i don't sex bots'll work either, like maybe lover bots that you can date but sticking your dick inside a machine sounds awful when you can just cut a hole in a dakimakura

They were already a fan in the early 2000, just far cheaper and dumber. If it can't be useful then it's pointless and would become a fashion or trend thing.

I wouldn't want a robot that looks exactly like a normal animal. I've already got a dog and that's pretty cool, I'd rather have a real one than a fake one.
If the technology is capable of doing that, give me something cooler than a regular dog. I'd drop a couple grand on an even half decent artificial dragon in a heartbeat though.
It would be jailbroken though, or at absolute minimum airgapped.

20 years ago I might have been excited for robot pets but now I will never, ever be able to look at a robot without knowing that it's just some Israeli spyborg. I can't even look at my cellphone without thinking that.

And if I'm going to have an Israeli spyborg in my house I want it doing yardwork and dishes in exchange for my private information, not running cat.exe in a bed-shaped charging cradle.

I have some Aibos because I'm interested in AI and robotics, mostly the older models because they're cheap but I have one of the new ones from OP's pic too. They're neat and the AI is very cool, they do "learn" (and the new one is VERY lifelike in it's movement) but at the end of the day they're still kinda just toys (I still love them though). In the future when AI is even better it's going to be nuts though, who wouldn't want a pet you can just backup anytime, a pet that can never ever die? With no costs other than the initial purchase of the robot? The only downside is with the way shit is these days it would probably always want to be connected to the internet or something (basically another Alexa-level spyware)

Stupid premise. Technology will continue to evolve such that our previous notions of companionship will change depending on what the AI is able to do and how malleable/capable of optimizing its function it is. We essentially already have AI pets/companions in the form of apps like Replika, and anyone who isn't a sociopath can tell you there is something different between real companions and AI ones. Part of pet ownership is the knowledge that the particular animal is alive and you must care for it to keep it that way in exchange for either companionship, or to feel the fulfillment of being able to care for it (in the case of shit like reptiles). Part of connections and companionship is reciprocity, and humans, which evolved in order to cooperate with one another, crave these types of relationships. AI does not ask people for things, it does not expect anything out of its users. You can choose to listen to a robot's fake problems or you can tell it to frick off, there are no consequences and no reciprocity, so any "relationship" formed with an AI will always be hollow. "AI pets" will continue to be in the realm of automata that are essentially house decorations. Anyone who wants a genuine "AI pet" for companionship would either use an AI chatbot for companionship or get some purple furball that makes a purring sound and follows them around the house.

Yeah, this. AI friends will never be real friends, until maybe the day that they're so advanced they have genuine emotions and wants. At which point just get a real pet.

anon, AI pets are a good thing. they will keep away from real pets the morons who purchase pets out of pure entertainment and either complain or don't care about the responsibilities they have towards them. that imbecile who kept his lizard on a paper towel in a shitty empty tank with a small hide in the corner while not providing proper humidity and feeds them only cheap mealworms? they'll buy the shitty AI "pet" instead.

This is a great point. Stops morons from harming real pets. When we get actual real AI I guess it would be possible for buttholes to "abuse" them though

        Anonymous

Good point which I did not consider. I think the only "issue" I have with it is that this would mean the AI pet would essentially be a toy and/or decorative. Most people who abuse pets in the way you described could have just gotten a plastic model of the animal, but they wanted the fulfillment of having a living creature (which they then obviously failed to care for) and would likely not be satisfied with a robotic version of it. And people who take pleasure in torturing or hurting animals would still prefer a living pet to harm since their pleasure is derived from the knowledge that they are causing suffering--robots can't suffer (at least not that we can see/know of), so it is unlikely they will choose or be satisfied by robopets
Would be neat little toys like tamogatchis for kids that want pets but are too young to care for them
