I know no animal dies a good death (except perhaps people who OD on opiates) but the fact that whales either drown or die beached on whale is pretty rough

the scariest thing about whales is that they're intelligent. and intelligent animals are often malevolent, sadistic and most of all unpredictable. a whale could murder you in the blink of an eye out of sheer frustration or boredom, and there's nothing you could do about it. you don't escape the attentions of a whale if you were stupid enough to attract it.

      Anonymous

whales are intelligent, yes, but they're not malevolent. what gives you that idea? people have dived with whales a lot, and they never get attacked, not even by orcas.

        Anonymous

Intelligent animals develop more complex personalities and are more individualistic. Moreover, animals that grew with their parents are highly susceptible to how they've been raised. Add to that the fact that intelligent aninals are often territorial and you have a recipe for psychos. I'm not saying that all whales are evil, just that some of them, like humans, are genuinely evil, and just as animals can't immediatly discern which human is the bleeding hearted animal lover and which is the one that enjoys torturing them with a car battery, we can't immediatly figure whether an animal like an orangutan or a dolphin are just feigning a friendly attittude and in reality only want us to get closer in order for them to maul us to death. Only that in case of whales you don't have room for error and ypu can't escape, they're fast as frick and even if they dpn't hit you directly they will stun you for enough time to drown.

Whales are incredible animals, but also terrifying if you are in the water with them. I don't care how peaceful or benevolent a blue whale is trying to be, a slight accidental twitch of its fins and you're squished.

Whales are fine. No strong feelings about them. The fact most people will go their entire lives without seeing one leads me to believe they also feel the same

What have you learned thus far?

        Sleeping habits
They're not scared of skin divers but avoid boats and drones.
Their sound is so intense it literally heats your body.
They've had spindle cell clusters millions of year before us.
Their eyes can retract and have the hardest lenses in the animal kingdom.
They swim upside down when hunting and the squid can actually see them doing this in water column.
Their jaw is effectively part ear.
        They're curious about us.

I heard somewhere recently that they can make a noise so loud it could kill someone, which has only just been observed being used to hunt fish. Don't have a sauce tho

Mostly a myth. People used to say dumb stuff like they attune their sound to the squids nervous system to paralyze it with sound but it's not true. While it's probably physically possible it's not something sperm whales do.

            Anonymous

No, they can't buzz-kill humans. But they can stun us IRL for 3-5 secs if we're too close when they produce their strongest noises.
            Which is impressive.

          >They swim upside down when hunting and the squid can actually see them doing this in water column.
Explain? I have trouble visualizing this

            Anonymous

They turn belly side up and thu'm the water below them with the loudest sound an animal can produce. It's pitch black down there but the squid can see the outline of them through the differnce in minor bioluminescence around them. The whale can't see shit though but it doesn't need to. Then they twist back around and dive after the squid in what is I imagine a pretty slow chase. The sperm whale does no chew so when it catches the squid all it's mouth really does is clip onto it and hold in place while the whale sucks out it's innards like would a struggling pop-ice. Although they usually go for medium-large squid because they're more pore populace and they don't have to dive so deep for them.

I think they are pretty important animals. I understand a whale fall is a very important event for the deep seabed. I'm sure they are pretty cool. I doubt I'd want to get in the water with them too close though. I don't like to swim with things that much bigger than me.
