Put yourself in his wee ratty shoes and think of what a giant hairless ape could do to make you feel at ease if you were a tiny fluffy rodent

Give him cuddles on his terms, show willingness to engage without being too forward, even drop off some treats very conHispanicuously so he associates you with the good times. It's nothing too complicated

Show some love, have some patience, and trust that the little dude will come around with time

He will, and you'll have an awesome little rat bro. Just as importantly he'll have a pretty cool human fren, too

Give them treats ! We love treats and it's not that expensive. Also you do scratches on the back ! It's simple and really good. Yes and sunflower seeds ! Very good ! You do all that
    Don't forget the treats !

Skin contact. Also, rats are smart enough to know a safe environment and already realize you're good for them.

Just as we anthropomorphize our pets, they also beast-ize us and put our behaviors in categories that make sense to them. Rats are communal, so they can look at what you're doing and classify you as part of the commune. In contrast, solitary animals like hamsters or snakes don't really have 'friend' in their dictionary, so they either classify you as 'predator' (and try to bite you when handled) or 'weird but harmless environmental feature' (which they tolerate).

I think contrary to popular belief hamsters can like you, just in a very simple way because they don't have a lot of social programming.

There are no truly non-social mammals. Always gotta at least tolerate potential mates, offspring, possibly littermates and their parents, etc.
