Buy a couple of ferrets, mang.

And set the traps with walnuts attached at places where your ferrets won't go.

That'll do the job, guaranteed. Cats are good, but in case of mice. Rats require a more vicious predator than a cat to get destroyed by.

Clean up whatever the rats are eating and set some rat traps.

Talking care of a dog is way harder than talking care of a cat.

But at least you dont have to take care of a cat

Only because people care more about what happens to the dog and chuck the cat out to die

In the third world dogs are as low maintenance as anything else and even feed themselves. But if your indoor cat is clingy like a dog in the first world “you raised your heckin cat wrong”

You have rats because there’s shit around for them to eat. Unfortunately, your don’t have the power to make changes that will get rid of the rats and the people that could want you to suffer.
Leaving food out for the cats attracts more rats than cats; bleeding hearts are always going to leave food out for the cats. The cats aren’t going to magically make the rats disappear no matter how many they manage to kill; there’s a reason rats aren’t endangered, cats just aren’t suited to controlling that species.
Having open garbage and food waste will attract rats; can be mitigated by incinerating it, sealing it in metal trash cans, or storing it far away from the location.
Improper food storage attracts rats; chew-resistant food storage options cost money.

What you CAN do is to clean and scrub your room as spotless as possible and keep food, wrappers, and crumbs out of it. You can seal up any gaps along the sides and top of the door. You can stuff foil or whatever you have that will fill in the gaps where pipes enter the wall as well as any other holes or gaps you find in your room. You can stretch metal screen (or rig up something similar to block rats without cutting off airflow) just inside the ventilation vents and no one will ever notice. If you have the luxury of a sink and toilet, there’s not much you can do with the toilet other than weighing down whatever works as a lid. With a sink, you can plug the drain with a rag when not in use if you can’t find a fancy screen or plug for it. Steel wool also makes a good gap filler.
If there is a crawl space under your room, clear any trash out of it if you can.

Actually, it’s called a chain of command doing all the stuff short of refitting pipes lodging metal wire into tubery is a sure fire way to get demoted. They just need one of those bomb sniffing jack Russell terriers to get approved from the government tax money.

        >They start killing the rats
Maybe one or two juveniles a week. What matters is that the rats will start behaving more carefully, and you will think they are gone despite still having rats.

Just try not to notice that the cats didn't actually do anything or you'll do what the europeans did. Get mad and start burning the cats in the town scare, causing all the rats that were just hiding to flood out, make direct contact with people, and give everyone the plague.

Or just make sure you never have any rats to begin with, use terriers and traps, and clean the frick up.

I have an elderly cat that still kills adult rats somewhat often but I agree that a single terrier with training is substantially better than a dozen cats.

You simply need more cats. My grandmother keeps 8 in the loft above her barn and I don't even see grasshoppers or fence lizards anymore. Feed them insufficiently enough to where they have to hunt to survive. Free kittens are everywhere, get 3-4, give them a bit of food once a day so they stay near you and they'll kill literally everything in time.

    Bro
Cats suck at pest control. It's a fricking meme that they control rats. In fact cats usually attract more rodents because toxo makes rats horny for cat piss.
Hell, cats are so bad at pest control that humans created multiple dog breeds for rat catching as well as domesticating polecats for that specific purpose in spite of cats being around and plentiful at the time.

Cats are very good for smaller rodents like mice. Which was their original purpose. You’re absolutely right though that most cats won’t touch a rat.

May I suggest you use traps instead? Glue traps are a godsend but some people think they’re cruel and some areas ban them. Poison can leave a rotten rat corpse in a wall or under a floor. Rolling barrel style traps can work pretty ok. Snap traps are commonly used by professionals but I’ve never had luck with them. Or just get a terrier as some have suggested. May I ask where you’re deployed?

Back when I was living in a shit hole, glue traps worked wonders, as well as snap traps though I will say it never totally got rid of the problem as such with infestations of these types of past relocating to a different areas gonna be your best bet lets just be honest for a moment

        Not really.
You'd have more luck with traps and bait.
Just buy some coyote urine and sprinkle it around outside.

They get used to the smell and come back. Otherwise cats would starve.

Cats eat a few rats but not enough to get rid of them. Get traps.
