When he starts shitting you pick him up mid shit and put him in the litter box.

my cat sometimes shuts outside her box when it's too dirty for her liking or if she's pissed off at the state of the house, like if we're doing to remodeling or if it's gone shithole mode. technically the best way to keep a litter box is to spot clean daily but i'm moronic and forget to do it until she's mad enough to blast caca doodoo shit everywhere. that or your cats moronic as well

    Dont. Hit. The. Cat.

Try to teach them to shit in another place.

    1. Clean the litter
    2. If the cat is still a bastard and shits outside: pick him up by his neck skin (where the mothers grab them), take him in front of the shit, say NO! NO!, he'll understand

    Real answers:

    Better litter system
    Clean box more regularly
More boxes (should be 1 box for every cat +1)
Ideally a box on every level of your house (not always reasonable)
    Keep floor clean
Thoroughly clean the area where the cat does poop so they won't smell their poop later--just picking up the turd is not sufficient

If these don't work, cat could have a medical issue such as athritis that makes it difficult to climb into the box (a ramp can help eith this) or some kind of infection

If your cat is pooping outside its litterbox, they are trying to communicate with you "something's wrong". It's up to you to figure out what. Look for other changes. Your cat is smart and will point you to the change it needs you to make. Here are some ideas to get you started. Does your cat hate it's litterbox? Do you need a second litterbox? Is your cat in pain? Has your car been drinking or eating less? More? Has the cat been itchy? Eyes watering? Dry eyes? Limping?
There are many things that could be wrong but for sure your cat is telling you something's wrong.

      >your cat is smart for shitting outside the litterbox
Actually it's just marking territory more aggressively when it feels insecure.

        >cat is sick
        >marks territory more blatantly to keep potential competitors scared away
        >using litterbox hurts
        >basic conditioning causes cat to avoid using litterbox
They are very simple animals really. Otherwise feel loose surface, use toilet. Yes even your laundry and houseplants.

not op but my (17yr) cat has kidney failure/associated polydipsia/occasional cystitis or FLUTD (sometimes has difficulty urinating or has specs of blood in her urine) and is having more trouble sticking to the litterbox or yard in the past year or so. i know its related to her kidney issues and probably gets worse when her pain is bad, but is there anything i can do to help her or prevent the stress and inappropriate urinating? shes still mostly comfortable and her disease isnt progressed enough for me to be considering euthanasia or anything like that, idk if she should be on painkillers though or if that would even help her /help the urination issue

Wet food, tuna, plain greek yogurt or plain kefir rven if you cant afford wet food, a big tub of greek yogurt is only a few bucks and a big spoonful a day will probably do wonders

Every time he shits, pinch off a steamy creamy log right on top of it. Your cat will be shit mogged and will use his little box in shame.
