Humans became bipedal because there were too few trees for us to climb. Hunting with nothing but endurance was done out of necessity and line of sight would not have been an issue.
If you can keep up with horses and outrun dogs on a warm north-European day then you can beat them on a hot African day.
It's probably true that we were warriors before hunters and the first meat we consumed was stolen from other predators rather than hunted.

The simplest explanation is that they use that muscle to survive and reproduce, thus it's evolutionarily necessary meaning strong muscle genes have been selected for.
Humans however don't need muscle to survive and reproduce, we just need the precision to use tools/the capacity to make tools. The slingshot is our muscle/claws/teeth, except it can kill from a distance with little need for big muscle to operate, allows us to fight without any risk of damage, and other species have no clue its coming until it breaks their skull or knocks an eye out. The ammunition is easy to find, the sling itself easy to craft (though admittedly difficult to operate). So instead being selected for big muscles, we selected for capacity to develop/operate tools. Part of it is also that as strength increases precision decreases. Chimps are terrible at throwing things precisely. so for humans it was actually disadvantageous to have too much strength, as ukthuk could sling rocks and kill big animals to feed 5+people, while dukchuk tried to fistfight a rhino only to learn what for. Also while ukthuk only needs 1600 calories a day to maintain his sleek build and can run 5 miles without gassing out, dukchuk needs 4000+ calories for his bodybuilder physique and gasses out after the 1st mile.
Not that I think sleek is better in modern society (I bulk), now that we don't need to hunt anymore because a great tool was devised: agriculture.

chimp muscle fiber is short compared to human fiber. while chimps get tired easily, humans won't. a chimp can still kill a human before it gets tired easily, though, so don't think the human stands a chance on pure endurance.

It's actually down to fat distribution, of all things. Humans need drastic measures to avoid a definition-erasing layer of subcutaneous fat, resulting in strongmen looking slightly obese while body-builders can easily trip into malnurished messes.

Chimp is the equivalent of a professional gymnast manlet. Small frame makes muscles look bigger at same mass due to shorter length. That plus moronic scientists being unable to set up strength tests properly plus average human being malnourished, fat and sedentary make chimps look better than they are.

It's a matter of give and take. A human will never naturally have the muscle mass of our ape relatives, but they by virtue of this will never have the fine motor control we have that allowed us to create and manipulate complex tools and dominate the world.

      Anonymous

Apes have this muscle because they constantly put pressure on and train them by simply living in a harsher environment, any human doing the same would easily mog an Ape when it comes to muscle mass and raw strength. No ape alive actually eclipses a strongman in force.

        Anonymous

Anatomically impossible since we lack a bunch of bones, ligaments and our muscle bellies are shorter. Even on steroids you won't be as strong as an ape because your anatomy is quite different. They have vertical pecs, you have horizontal ones and your shoulder anatomy is completely different too. You have a couple bones missing in your forearms and wrists too meaning you'll never have that kind of grip strength that other apes do.

Humans were detached from nature because of civilisation and became weak, therefore humans have to create artificial struggle for themselves such as going to gym and bodybuilding to become muscular and strong. Chimps were not detached from nature and they have the natural struggle that is necessary to be strong and muscular

What the frick are you talking about? Primitive people that still live in nature and hunt with spears are not "strong and muscular"
Humans don't need muscles in the first place. Craft yourself a simple atlatl and you'll be able to launch darts at 90 mph, enough to kill mega fauna from 50 yards or more.
Instead of wasting calories on extra muscles you should just feed your tribe.

No it’s extremely primitive human and we never really did it in its pure form. We track, wound, and trail.

Pure exhaustion hunting is a canine thing. They’re built for it and only hunt in the dim hours because solar radiation is a b***h even if you sweat. FYI furred animals are more efficient sweaters than humans and our evolution is best explained by sexual selection and power walking after wounded game.

                Anonymous

Absolutely not true. We can easily run down any canine with the right weather. They're not even close to being as good as we are but yeah we did stop persistence hunting at some point because there are way better methods, they just require some intelligence.

                Anonymous

No, you can not. You would be able to track and power-walk down a wounded one, maybe, but any canine will be out of your line of sight very fast. Part of that is because canines are actual persistence hunters and can run much faster, much longer than you. They do it in part by preferring the cooler parts of the day.

True persistence hunting has never been our thing. Every animal can outrun us. We do not chase shit down and rely on that alone. We chucked rocks and spears to injure animals and then power walked. If we were persistence hunters we would have kept fur like horses did for better sweat evaporation at higher speeds and reduces the amount of heat absorbed from sunlight. The way humans hunt has remained essentially unchanged except for the likelihood of our initial ranged attack killing prey immediately. Wound and track.

humans evolved their endurance by walking everywhere for food, not hunting it down. a lot of people forget what we were before we became hunter gatherers. we were scavengers. people say you're wrong if they hear this, i noticed, because they think it's impossible for us to have ever been just primal animals at one point, walked around in the desert for food, using primitive tools not suited for the hunter gatherer lifestyle.

nature would have killed us long before today. that much is clear, as we are the only homosexual species still around. No matter how you interpret that fact, it's clear we would have lost if we were not smart.

How are chimps naturally built with such huge muscles when humans need a gym and to bulk to get these size of arms and legs

The actual answer is that humans developed for stamina, not twitch strength or speed. Chimps have way more muscle as a percentage of body weight, this makes them stronger but also makes their energy requirements extremely high.

Humans became the apex predator due to tool used in part, but our more efficient bodies are capable of staying alert and avoiding exhaustion for many many times the duration of other species.

The way we hunted was to just follow something around at a leisurely pace and distance. It was certain to tire out and collapse long before the people hunting it.

That is literally what we did for thousands and thousands of years you absolute moron.
You don't need to injure an animal to exhaust it and deny it food and water.
Humans can last WAY WAY WAY longer in MUCH harsher conditions without food or water or rest than anything except beasts of burden we've bred for specific climes.

Horses and wves were superior to is before selective breeding. Humans throw rocks at stuff before they chase it. We did not evolve running legs and then throwing shoulders, we evolved throwing shoulders and then running legs. Reducing the distance traveled by injuring game saves energy, reduces the risk to yourself, and most importantly, because you still have to bring the shit back to your kids, the distance back to home.

The man hunts like wolf hypothesis was made by morons who don’t want to believe early man was smart enough to use weapons.

                >We did not evolve running legs and then throwing shoulders, we evolved throwing shoulders and then running legs
Actually what we evolved was less muscle mass and hairless bodies with extremely efficient heat exchange.

You don't need to even read theories on ancient history to see the "follow and starve/dehydrate it" method, they still fricking use it in Africa to this day.

I do not understand why you are so against this very well established concept that the human body developed for low-energy endurance. It's the explicit answer to OP's question.

                Anonymous

Huge problem there popsci macreddit. Hairless bodies are LESS adapted to staying cool. And what Africans do can be assumed to be degenerated as easily as it can be assumed to be ancestral. Show me this tribe of even more moronic africans because most spear/clobber stuff before they chase it, which was, yknow, why hominids developed tool use and a good bipedal gait.

Hairless bodies are great for extremely large megafauna. Just not for us. See again: horses. Your midday endurance improves with light breathable clothing.

on a side note, is there any good evidence or sources on whether tool use or bipedalism came first? I've always thought that bipedalism being selected due to hands being used to clutch rocks or sticks more and more often made sense

Bipedalism comes from arboreal ancestry. Ancestors used their forelimbs to grab branches to steady themselves.

The endurance thing is a fricking Redditor meme, and relies entirely on our ability to carry food and water with us and usually injuring the animal first rather than the biological advantage implied. Endurance hunting as a modern theory on human evolution was invented by two pseudoscientists to sell books to joggers and morons, it is a discredited theory. Only few peoples did it, one for tourism and the other as a rite of passage (as in: do this really impractical thing that no sane person would do and you become a man). Human hunting was actually tool and stealth based. That it still gets parroted around is truly a testament to how little research anyone does on things they heard and think is "cool" esoteric wisdom they are sharing.
