>Hey, this brain thing consumes enormous quantities of energy.
>Our offspring takes even longer to mature! Like ten years before it can do anything!
>I know! Let's keep selecting for it

What was the logic there? Surely early tool use didn't make this worth the trade.

name one animal with ranged attacks, no meme answers like pistol shrimp or bombardier beetles. being able to throw shit effectively and smart enough to build better things to throw was literally a game changer.

The human body truly is amazing
    >have brain that's more powerful than any computer or machinery or anything that requires electricity
    >powered completely by putting various matter into mouth
    >have desktop computer that's significantly weaker than the brain
    >need to feed it a few tonnes of coal into a giant furnace to power it
Of course, the furnace is just a metaphor for our bodies, and has its own mouth where the coal is fed into, while the coal itself that is fed into it is a metaphor for the pure reduction of all life on earth to their most fundamental energy form as carbon-based lifeforms.
One must wonder if the furnace feels the same ecstasy we do when consuming food.

That’s not how (darwinian) evolution works. You are describing a weird form of lamarckean evolution.

Protip: natural selection isn't some active force that does things. It's in the word itself. It's natural in the sense that the strongest survive, and the weak enough to not be able to carry themselves die off.

Also, the reason it takes so long is because humans literally let their babies gestate longer so that they can learn and get better at life compared to say a deer who has to be in the game immediately.

      >the strongest
Just the ones that reproduce before dying more often than things that eat the same stuff in live in the same place. if evolution meant the strongest survivied everything but bears would be dead right now.

Yeah, and Lions Eye Diamond shouldn’t be around in a world of Black Lotuses. Yet they occupy different niches and don’t bother each other, so they both manage to stay around.

they mean strongest as in healthiest in their environment, not brute strength. the best for the situation.
obviously longer maturation times posed some sort of advantage, but it is no longer advantageous because humans adapted past evolutionary needs. i often say humans are a prisoner of their own bodies, their brains mutated intelligence beyond their own body's capabilities due to tool usage.

having more intelligence to know how to avoid threats instead of fighting or being vulnerable to them is better than having 0 brains and a jacked resistant body

    >The 1.8 Ma Mojokerto child specimen from Java, who died at about 1 year of age, presented 72–84% of the average adult brain size, which is more similar to the faster brain growth trajectory of great apes than modern humans. This indicates that H. erectus was probably not cognitively comparable to modern humans, and that secondary altriciality—an extended childhood and long period of dependency due to the great amount of time required for brain maturation—evolved much later in human evolution, perhaps in the modern human/Neanderthal last common ancestor.

Extended childhood didn't come til much later. homosexual erectus is pretty much self-sufficient soon after birth and can already produce tools, so it's not such a limiting factor.

This Anon already beat me to it:
The moment early Hominids learned how to throw shit at other animals this evolutionary arms race was fricking over. Being able to pick up a rock, throw it, and stone to death something else from a safe distance just gave us an unfathomable advantage that trivialized any other individual weakness we may have had.

Granted, this didn't mean we stopped evolving, but Intelligence & tool use now meant that our evolution could finally be dictated by personal developments instead of exclusively by the environment.
