The long neck wasn't for vertical reach.
One sauropod can stand in one spot and it can use its long neck to graze on everything in reach.
It was also a counterbalance for their tails which were used defensively. They would have been able to crack the tips of their tail like a whip.

      >They would have been able to crack the tips of their tail like a whip.
their tails didn't have the structural integrity to survive rapid bending at the speed of sound. The bones would've just popped out and flew across the countryside

wouldn't that neck be way too big to counterbalance the tail?

      >One sauropod can stand in one spot and it can use its long neck to graze on everything in reach.
I never bought this stupid theory. Animals don't evolve long necks to just...keep feeding from the ground.
      >It was also a counterbalance for their tails
In brachiosaurs, mamenchisaurs and titanosaurs, the neck was much longer than the tail. Way overkill for what would've been needed for counterbalance.
      >They would have been able to crack the tips of their tail like a whip
Diplodocids could, to a point, but the others couldn't.

there's no real reason to believe Diplodocids could

That's why I said "to a point". They had longer tails than other sauropds that tapered off to a point. I have little doubt they could swing their tails around at predators. Cracking them like whips at actual whip speed, probably not so much.

You mean absolutely massive? You sound like you've never seen an adult oak tree in your life.

There are trees today that would be too tall for them to feed on.

    >sauropod now can't keep its head up, can't move or feed properly, die

We live in such a ruined world that most moderns don't even realize that only a few centuries ago there were absolutely massive trees compared to what we have now. A lot of people don't even realize that most "virgin forests" in the West have actually almost all been totally logged by now. Even in places like the Appalachians the rangers and park services will say things like "this forest has never been logged". That's a lie.

There's no indication that this is a fossil tree. It sure is an impressive rock formation, though.

man, this would make a good video game universe.
maybe have a god seed in it hatch, and a new world tree starts to grow up out of it. the original was cut by some interfering force, and the seed within has been feeding on the stump all this time and is ready to sprout.

maybe have others across the planet also exist, their stumps hidden as mountains or something over these years. they sprout too, and it brings the metaphysical back to earth, so that the things described in old religions can start to happen again. new gods are born from the fruit of the trees.
