Giant wasp

Anyone know exactly what this thing is? Its some sort of large wasp but i dont know the species and have never seen one in the area before. I work in Frederick Maryland and this thing was dying on the roof. Im just curious if i now have to worry about being carried off by one of these giant things.

Always find it hilarious that most euros don't know how to convert inches to millimeters but 90% of Americans know how to convert millimeters to inches.
Probably the differences in the school systems.

Since this is a /wasp/ thread, how long should I wait before calling another exterminator? Had one come over on Sunday to do what he did to a yellow jacket hole in the wall outside and while I can see them dying there’s still a shitton of the fricks.

If you're in texas, that's a tarantula wasp. They're native. They hunt tarantulas and lay their eggs in them and bury them.

No, it looks nothing like any North American Pepsis species.Picrel is a tarantula hawk. The wasp OP found is a cicada killer. Also, he said he was in Maryland.

stop hating vespidae for no reason, if you are getting stung its on you for fricking with them and if you are just killing them because you see them you should head to a hardware store and get some rope, cowardly subhuman behavior

Asking what a dying insect is does not equal killing or hating it. You might be mildly moronic and illiterate friend.

Based, theres 2 huge wasp nests right in my garden next to my chair and they have never stung anyone, they dont react at all even if i get a foot awat from their nest. When i water the plants they fly down to get water

    They're harmless.

Ding ding ding. If you found it dead it's probably a male who bred out. The female lays her eggs in a dead cicada she burys in her nest and the babies eat their way out. Common this time of year with the dog day cicadas out and pretty harmless unless you frick with them.

Males might seem like they are dive-bombing or flying erratically but they are just searching for mates

The reason you don't see them frequently is because cicadas hang out way up in trees, so these guys do too.
