Get your male cat's bladder checked regularly

I put my cat down for a blocked urethra yesterday. I've never paid for big vet stuff, usually my parents do, but they couldn't justify $3k to unblock him since it could re-block.

I'm pretty broke but I've got $8k in bitcoin and I could have sold some of it to unblock him. That's all it is a blocked fricking tube they just have to catheterize. Otherwise he was young and perfectly healthy. I didn't have a lot of time to think about it and I knee-jerk rested on 'don't sell bitcoin for any reason' and I let my fricking cat die over this little bullshit. I'm gonna watch that bitcoin go to zero over the next 5 years and feel fricking torturous about it. I can't believe I didn't have a fricking spine and make the call.

He was all sedated and spooked and I could have him here keeping me company at my computer like he used to I just needed to be an adult and have a spine and I fricking didn't.

God damn it. I got more happiness from that cat that I do from my human connections. I frick those up left and right but my cat always thought I was the best. And now I frick that up too. Frick.

If you have a male cat, this can happen at any time, you should prepare for this so you know what your decision will be and you don't decide to euthanize your cat just because the other people in the room think it's the right option. No one told me about this, otherwise I'd have known the stats going in and been more confident to make the correct decision.

- if your cat is male there's about a .5% chance that he'll get a blocked urethra.
- if his urethra blocks completely you've got like 10-20 hours until his body gets all toxic and his liver and heart start failing.
- you've got 24-48ish hours until his bladder bursts and he dies in extreme pain.

If a tomcat gets blocked multiple times (and diet etc. hasn't prevented blocking) vets here will surgically remove the tip of the penis so the crystals forming in the bladder have more space to pass through. That tends to work well.

But yeah, it ain't cheap. Sorry for your loss, OP.

But also how tf is it $3k? It's literally just sticking a pipe up there. I learned to put in a catheter in like 3rd year of med school. It's easy as piss and takes like 2 minutes of actual work.

$100 for the materials and procedure
$2.9k cause I have to touch a disgusting cat's pp. If I'd be a vet, I would do it for free for canines.

It costs a bit more than just $100 for the materials but a lot of it is the doctor's "production" (AKA commission) on the procedure and whatever gets kicked up to the owner of the clinic. If you went to a 24/7 hospital they probably charged more because they can.

My dog got a blocked urethra and I spent like 4k twice to unblock it, then the second time the vet told me to change his diet to Urinary Royal Canin, told me to give him that at least for 2 months
I gave it for 4 months, and then change the food of the THREE dogs I have (I feed them the same food) to a more expensive one.
I would fricking kill myself if my dog dies because I didn't spend enough money on better food.
I still check his bladder regularly in case he's holding liquid because it may be the dog and not the food.
But I sympathize with you OP, it sucks that it was your cat, dog's bladders are bigger and mine was also in pain but the danger zone is a big bigger (1-2 more days) and was able to act in time.

As said, kinda feels like I want to. Have some responsibilities to some people though.

You'll have to live with this your entire money. Was it worth it? Time will tell.

Yeah I've been struggling with exactly this. I've realized I'm not a total 'pick the money' guy b/c I only had the euthanasia issue in front of me for an hour, and my parents & the vets were describing it as extremely chronic. As if he'd most likely be re-blocking every few days. I remember thinking '6k this week, 6k again in a couple weeks, I literally don't have enough'. I think the vets sensed my parents wouldn't spend 3k and were trying to make them feel confident in their choice.

When I had the info later that it would most likely (60%) be 3k once a year, I immediately realized I would have spent it if I knew the odds and wasn't listening to the vet say 'they come back in for a re-block alll the time'.

But it doesn't hurt less, because there is a mistake that I'll live with the rest of my life: not being prepared walking into the vet with those odds in my mind. I normally look up studies on all medical stuff (usually I have more than 5 hours to consider an ailment) but I googled it, saw one result and figured I could rely on my parents because they've always saved our animals in the past. I don't blame them b/c they never would have found the study in time. But if I hadn't been a loser mindlessly arguing on Wauf all day I would have found the study and been confident in getting the catheterization.

      Sorry for your loss OP

You would have wasted away your money because your cat was gonna get blocked again. I know because my cat got blocked over and over again. But you're also a dumbass for doing no research on it at all. I can't remember if I took my cat to the vet for this or not, I don't think I did, but it doesn't even matter because those homosexuals didn't heal him. Want to know the solution to this? Wet canned food, with some water, and some apple cider vinegar, you could also throw in some antibiotic you could buy from Amazon in there. That's what I did with my cat. He unblocked and pissed like no tomorrow. He blocked himself I don't even know how many times. In the beginning he was blocked for like three days without being able to pee, I have no idea how he made it but he did. He hasn't had those problems since, although he now does have anal gland abcess but that isn't as life threatening.

This happened to my last male cat when he was fairly young. Like 8 or 9 months old. Luckily I noticed him attempting to piss and not being able to before it got bad and that the vet was open. They got him unclogged and I put him on a specialty diet to make sure it didn't happen again and he lived a good 17 years.

I spent over €4000 on one of my dogs already, she is only 1,5 years old now and broke two different legs on two different occassions. This in contrast to my four other dogs that have only ever needed their vaccinations and of which the oldest will be fifteen this year. Sometimes you just have bad luck with pets but you need to be prepared for it when you get an animal imo. I refuse to do over the top treatments like chemotherapy with my dogs but things like broken bones or a blocked urethra that can be fixed I will absolutely shell out for, especially in such a young animal. I think you suck OP, enjoy your imaginary money.

I've been thinking about it and I'm probably gonna sell some bitcoin and go into that emergency vet and ask them if I can pay for the next person who says they can't afford this procedure and opt to euthanize. Like they set aside the money and next time the decision I made pops up, they're like "actually this dude was in your position and paid, we're gonna do this for you".

I hope the vet is honest and doesn't just take the money. tbh they're probably not financially setup for something weird like this, but I'm sure I can figure out some sort of arrangement. Lol I wonder what the minimum fee structure for a trust is. Technically I think I could set up a trust with a lawyer they could call and the money would "sit" there so they don't have to deal with it on their books. The blocked-cat-urethra trust fund.

well what you'd do is not give them money. money invites bad spirits
It would be better to give them your phone number, preferably on a business card. Tell them, "the next person that has a cat with a blocked urethra and can't pay you tell them to call me"

          Anonymous

see I'd be into that except it's such a time sensitive thing. Like if it takes me an hour to call back or something that can be the difference between the cat living and dying or being out of my budget to save because all its organs are failing. And like if I don't pick up how horrible. Like they gave the owner some hope and then it's like "oops nvm, he's gonna have to pay for the next one. ur cat's gonna die after all sorry pal"

lmao you just gonna make the vet richer with a nice fat tip. i wish i could work in a clinic which attracts morons like you.

yeah I'm concerned about that. Idk I'm gonna hold onto the money I have now for my remaining animals, but once I have more I'm def gonna look into somehow setting something like this up.

It wasn't just that. My parents had clearly decided to euthanize because they've spent a lot on a lost cause pet before. The vet picked up on their decision and did describe it kind of as a lost cause to make them feel ok in their decision. As if he was just gonna block every month forever. I found out after that's not true.

This happened to my last male cat when he was fairly young. Like 8 or 9 months old. Luckily I noticed him attempting to piss and not being able to before it got bad and that the vet was open. My cat got a blocked urethra but fortunately I could afford the full package. Got him the best vet in the city. He said it's not just the cat food, it's also stress that contributes. Prescribed a certain type of cat food, iirc there are two types of crystals, struvites and something else. My cat is now permanently on the (expensive) cat food that dissolves those crystals. But even just running that food for a month helps prevent this.

      >special diet
We did this and it didn't work. Even tried homemade food. And he seemed to drink plenty of water everyday.

Not sure if you're being serious about that getting stuck in his urethra or what lol

Cats have renal systems that sadly love to give out in older age no matter gender. It's just that male cats have a longer urethra for the kidney stones to get lodged in which caused the problem with OPs cat.
Dietary needs in good cat foods ie Purina, hills, etc. Take this into consideration and there are prescription renal diets that your cat can eat if needed but honestly if your cats gonna have stones, they're gonna have stones

Sorry for your loss OP, regardless of species it always sucks to lose your special friend.

Ignore the morons who say just buy another cat and that bitcoin will recover, they are soul-less beings in denial of their reality who don`t know what it is to have affection for another living being.
Sorry to hear about your cat, and yes, sometimes it is the right thing to do to spend money we had invested/saved to help what we love even if we miss te oportunity to make more money.
However what you should also consider is if your cat was really going to have a full life, maybe it was going to have other comorbidities, and eventually the day was going to come when no matter what you did he was going to pass away.
I know this was not the end you wanted for your friend and you must feel guilty, but it is the cycle of life and all living things will die someday, but rest assured that the time you spent with him was not in vain and your cat had a happy life by your side.

I’ve got 3… 2 cats now and Imwouldn’t drop thousands on the other two even though I love them. This was more like a dog in a cat’s body. Even after he’d get food he’d hang around me and sleep in my lap and play with me. And he never fricked with my shit like other cats to demand attention. HOWEVER
    - if you can afford to get him catheterized overnight for a 'full flush' he's only got a 1-in-7 chance of re-blocking again in the week
    - if he makes it through the week he's got a 1-in-3 chance of re-blocking within a year
    - you really gotta do the full flush catheterization, if you just do it for an hour or whatever to "only" clear the urethra, not the bladder, he's very likely to re-block within days.
-if your cat does re-block, no big deal, just re-catheterize. it's not even an operation, they just sedate him and stick a tube in his dick for a while.
    - it's a simple procedure that basically always works and the only question is if you can afford it. In the US it's like 2-3k for the 'full flush' but I've heard of vets doing it for much less, like $3-700.

I'm so fricking upset and I want my buddy back and I don't know how I'm gonna go through life if I keep fricking failing like this when it counts. My lil dude died in my arms and I saw his tail was all bottle-brush even though he was super sedated he died afraid. FRICK FRICK FRICK
