Right now, we have a way to eradicate the mosquito species that spreads malaria using CRISPR-based gene drives, a gene that makes the females infertile. The reason it hasn't been done yet is because of yuropoor lobbying groups that don't think humans should interfere with the natural order. Probably the same people who protest against nuclear power.

Eradicating malaria will LOWER africa's birthrate, and make them richer, and less likely to immigrate to your country or require foreign aid. It's a win-win.
Literally a million people die every year for no reason except "muh ecosystem!!"

    Every single time we try to remove some natural check on population growth in Africa, their population explodes. Currently they are on track to be the most populous continent on Earth in 100 years. I'm all for fricking over mosquitoes, but Africa needs to unfrick itself first.

    At least three of the real world trials for mosquito infertility only ended up with a new population of normal mosquitoes drifting in not all that long after the infertile population died back.
    Making the mosquito gut inhospitable to malaria showed way more promise.

        I couldn’t find the other article and location I was referring to, but this article’s particular strain is for sterile males and has about 5% of the 1st batch of offspring survive to spread the gene. The company that made them, Oxitec, currently has a new type (still sterile male and dead female) with 50% offspring survival instead, so the genes should persist a little longer. I couldn’t find an article about the gene persistence of those in particular, but they were released in Brazil in 2019 and I think 2020 too as well as Florida in 2021 and 2022. There’s approval for California and Texas releases as well.

        If you just want a source for mosquito populations rebounding after releasing sterile males in general and all the models of trying to find the optimal male number, frequency, and sites to release to get the best suppression for the cheapest price, there’s about 80 years of research to sift through that all the modern methods are compared against.

            Nope. Though, the gene drive infertile mosquito strains prior to about six years ago still ran into the same types of problems regarding potential usefulness.

            The only promising gene drive infertile female mosquito strains I know of that may actually persist in the wild (modifes doublesex gene and females are only sterile when both parents have the gene) still aren’t anywhere close to being ready for field trials yet. Maybe in another five years or so? The inheritance tends to be kinda fricky and may or may not lead to other problems. Granted, the last update I’ve read on those is this article from last year https://rdcu.be/cWwcF so, there’s probably an update out there somewhere.

    I think the greenie radicals get hung up on the idea of driving mosquitos extinct because they don’t understand that there are multiple species of mosquitoes and most don’t spread disease. When the “bad” mosquitoes get wiped out the “good” mosquitoes can fill their niche without constant pest control pressuring the ecosystem.
