Horse meat is good, but only *nglo countries see its consumption as bad because they put horses on the same level as household pets.
Meanwhile most other countries eat horses, however it's becoming less common as people are getting lazier and don't make their own food. Here it's actually easier to find equine meat than rabbit meat, not that the latter is hard to find.
Horses are too smart, social, and display too much personality and willpower. They're not like cannibalistic pigs and pitbulls or most other passive and treacherous herd animals.
Donkeys are even better and will attack and kill animals they perceive as threatening.
Just round up the males, geld them, and send them on their way. Easy peasy.

The only real reason why the US ecosystem can't really support feral equines is that there are currently too few wolves and cougars around in their range. Same reason why it is currently struggling to support whitetails.
Modern wolves and cougars are not adapted to hunt horses as prey, especially not domestic horses that are much larger and stronger than their wild ancestors. Direwolves and Saber-toothed cats probably struggled to hunt extinct NA equids, modern wolves and cougars have 0 chance.
Face it, NA ecosystem cannot support large feral horse populations. They're demolishing the environment and BLM is stretched so thin trying to fix it all the while having horse girls breathing down their neck to take 'good care of the poniess' otherwise they'll make a stern Instagram story.

That's not actually correct. One of the two North American native horses still exist. It's called the Przewalski's Horse today though.
