Euthanizing my first cuban tree frog.

Euthanizing my first cuban tree frog. Feels kinda shitty ending a creature's life but apparently these frogs are destroying the eco system and are highly invasive.

How do I feel less bad and what do you do to eliminate invasive species?

You think that's bad, try shooting cats when you love cats. It sucks, but every time I see them on my property I know the right thing to do is kill them to protect the native species population. Thanks Pentti 🙁

Blunt force very quickly and painlessly ends any small animals life. I do it when I catch round gobies, it makes you feel like a psychopathic cave man, but it's honestly the most humane way to do it.

    >How do I feel less bad?

Take the creature in as a solitary pet. You're removing the creature from the ecosystem, so it won't reproduce; but you haven't killed it and it might live out its natural lifespan.

    invasive species are a meme
no one was crying 'invasive species" during the Great American Biotic Interchange
or when a bipedal, stick-lobbing ape started migrating across the globe

It's not euthanizing, moron. It's culling.

    Why would you euthanize it?
If it's already established where you live, you may have reduced the population by 0.00001%.

Lately I've been seeing less lizards, spiders, and other frogs. If I do see a frog its usually a cuban now days. So my goal is to start regularly doing this every time I see a cuban not just 1 and done

Still pointless. You may be able to suppress them very locally, like in your garden. But they will come back as soon as you stop.
There's nothing one can do against abundant invasive species, except for habitat modification, poison and biological control.

Yeah if I can haul them from breeding in the backyard I'll consider that a win.

Are there a lot of Cuban frogs? If not it might be a problem with the habitat and not the frogs themselves. Invasives exploit damaged ecosystems.

Not too sure, there's a decent amount of them here in North FL, I see probably 3-4 Cubans for every 1 green tree frog.

            >North FL
Florida's ecosystem is already far beyond saving and will get much worse in the coming decades.
100% futile. Almost every ecological niche will be dominated by invasive species.

unironically. you're trying to ward off a tsunami with a bucket here.
your efforts are better devoted elsewhere, like building a boat

                Go big or go home.
It's pointless to keep abundant, small and highly fecund animals out of places that can be colonized from nearby because they will do in no time.
To keep mice out of the bird colonies of South Georgia island, they had to poison every single corner of the whole thing.

Don't give in to the pessimism, if everybody was out culling invasives maybe things would be slightly less shitty. If nothing else you're sending those non-native freeloaders a message and that counts for something. I would just double check to make sure they are real invasive species and not lookalikes, but if you're in Florida then the exotics there probably stand out very obvious.

The adult Cubans are very obvious here. The one I froze was about 4 or 5 inches long and about 3 fingers wide one of the larger one's I've seen in the wild

are they edible? frogs taste just like chicken. if you're going to be killing a lot it could become a regular dinner lol

this is how a butcher kills a frog. like a fish, stab into the brainstem and push down to completely obliterate the brain, pain would last all of one second.

      Is freezing inhumane?
Looks like it's the preferred method but a few spazzes online are suggesting freezing is a painful death for invertebrates.

Google is saying to put benzocaine on its back then wait until it passes out first. It would be extremely inhumane for you to just freeze it.

          Anonymous

O shit.... I figured the chemicals were the inhumane part plus I don't have any so I skipped that part. I stuck it in the fridge for about 45mins and now it's been in the freezer for around 30-40mins. Should I take it out and absolutely go buy the chemical later today?

Keep it in there, the worst of the pain is probably already past and it's just going to have to suffer for longer if you take it out and its nerves defrost and remember how to make it feel pain. You fricked up this time, try not to think about it

Damn. Thought the fridge would serve as a shutdown almost. If 40+ mins is already too long yeah I guess I'll keep it in there. Its pretty goddamn large.

there's no pain. cold just turns them off. people thought ice crystals forming might hurt but scientists monitored their brain activity and it's just a smooth decrease as they get colder. I would refrigerate first like you did but that's it
