Is easier for you and the dog if you do punishment and reward at the moment of behavior. Dogs are present creatures. If you find a dog shit in house and beat the dog he's going to know you're mad at the shit, but he's not necessity going to connect that with the act of taking the shit. If the dog gets into trash you need to catch him in the act and scold.

What do you mean by train it not to do the bad thing. If hes going to take a bite out of something and you shove a stick in his face sure. If you want to beat him with the stick to stop him pissing in your house you should reconsider large portions of your life

What if he did someone bad while I was away? When could I shove the stick in his face?

I'm not training him. When I got home I noticed he did something wrong when I was out. When do I train him not to do it? I thought it was the moment he did the bad thing

The second he does wrong or a second after. Rubbing your dogs nose in his own shit after you come home from work is just unproductive animal abuse to make you feel better about the shitty (lol) situation.

I usually laid traps for my dogs whenever it did it bad things like damaging furniture at night (pretend I go to sleep them fricking standby at my door and wait (the dog eventually got used to my bait and legit listened to my footsteps after I closed the door so I had to get smarter)), but if I know it's a thing he did in the past 30 minutes, I'd have scolded it upon finding it.
But honestly, you should just go by gut feeling.
One time I found out it ate some food I left on a table that I had cooked not long ago and didn't even get to eat, I scolded that b***h regardless of the fact that it was over an hour ago, and it never did it again.

To address unacceptable behavior in your pet, show them evidence of the destructive actions they took. They may initially be unaware of your anger, but with repeated scolding they will understand your disapproval. The success of this approach depends on the level of respect your pet has for you. If there is a lack of respect, this method may not be as effective.

So hold the object they destroyed/ate to their face and say no?

Something like that. Or bring them to the object/whatever they destroyed, peed on, etc.

Perhaps being in the place where they broke something - or whatever it is they did - can really get it through to them what is going on and what is being communicated.

be stern, use words and they'll eventually understand.

Don't abuse them or scare/traumatise them, though.

Then do it better next time, if u accidentally traumatise them though it's kinda fugged, but try to be better.

Hypothetically, if my dog stole food and shat all over my carpet while I was jogging 2 miles, how could I teach him that that's wrong? Please answer the question and nothing else. Yes, I know I should put the food out of his reach. I'm not a fricking idiot. That is painfully apparent. Do not tell me something that is as obvious as the blue sky. I am asking, on the off chance I frick up again, how can I teach him that that's a bad thing, like shitting on my carpet?

You could set a trap for it
