This probably plays more a role than the sex of the dog. Puppies have a smell. Adult dogs have a smell. And seniors have one.

Neutered male dogs smell different than intact male dogs. Intact dogs smell weird to me. Neutered dogs just kind of smell a little doggy. Their feet are like corn chips and up near their ears smells a little sweet somehow. If they get wet, they smell like wet carpet.

Pretty sure she was severely ill. An intact dogs various glands should secrete scents ranging from fritos to woody, peat-like, semi-floral, and vanilla scents. And piss. Males smell pissy. Like the really bad kind of piss.
Neutered males smell a good bit better than intact males but still worse than any female. Females smell ok to great, except in heat. There's a short period where it's fucking rank with a strong pussy smell. Ovary sparing spays don't solve that rank part either, it's just how it is. If you can't stand it just spay your dog. After 2 years there's almost no difference if the ovaries are out unless you have a very physically active animal or one that already has joint issues.

My current dog was intact until ~6 years old and was then spayed because I moved in with family and they got it into my head that she'd get cancer by constantly harping on it and giving anecdotes. Later they admitted to manipulating me because they never had an intact dog and was afraid she'd get pregnant or bleed on the floor.
Anyway. The surgery seemed to go well, but that night she bled all over the floor, ironically. I had to take her to a 24 hr emergency vet to stop the bleeding and she was put on fluids and watched for a day. Then everything seemed good, but less than a year later she started getting urinary incontinence issues and fucked up their floors even more, kek. But it's sucked ever since for her. She always feels so bad after having an accident even if it's just a little leak. She also developed digestion issues shortly after that, but it's harder to say if it's related.
Spay incontinence is caused by:
one part incompetent vets mandhandling the uterus and all attached tissues, damaging god knows what on their way through
one part hormones weakening the urethral sphincter (treatable)

She's on hormones but it only partially works.
Had 3 males growing up and they definitely smelled a lil stronger of dog than the female I have now. Though the best part of owing a bitch is the extra real-estate for tummy rubs.
