It was just an hour ago, I picked up my chicken as it was sleeping alarming all of her sisters and carried her put to a chair by the pond in my backyard, I pet her for a bit at times she would glance around her as if concerned it was dark after all and she was supposed to be enclosed in a cage and safe. But eventually she settleted doen her legs disappeared ah she crouched in my lap and slept, I drank risling wine as I stared at the black outline of trees, the moon was out but obscured by clouds. Creating a full light in the sky eventually I brought her back to the coop to rest for the night and locked it, As I did her sisters pecked my wrist as I put her down. Concern for themselves or their sister whom I had taken. No w I will drink more wine and sit and star en the black outline of trees

Saw a mink skulking around my coop. Any recommendations on what precautions I should take to keep it from getting in? Already set up some traps.

      Anonymous

If you have a free standing wooden coop that is not inside any other structure it will chew its way in or fiddle with a latch eventually. Mink/foxes/coyotes can theoretically get through anything that isn't a double latched metal or cement box. Trap it for now, chuck it out in a distant field so it can eat mice instead of chickens, and then build a wire run with a ceiling (no climb fence!) around the coop. You'd put a fence around your house for human sized issues so why not put a fence up for the chickens and chicken sized issues? Even if you're letting the chickens run around when you're home and the sun is out, the run around the coop totally prevents ingress and gives you an place to keep the chickens when it's not safe for whatever reason.

If you have a chicken run you can just lay chicken wire flat on the ground going a foot out, stake it down, blend it with the walls of the run, and put dirt/gravel over it. The only animal that can get past that shit is a bear or the worlds smartest and most dedicated raccoon.

Both are useless. A corporation can raise more chickens more efficiently. You just have a hobby. A dog is expensive and most chickens are cheap. That’s the only difference.

Go to the store. Chickens are everywhere. You’re not surviving you’re growing herbs on your windowsil basically. Neither of you has a right to take life over a HOBBY. Death begets death, humans are the only moral agents on earth, and i’ll laugh when one pseudo-rural bugman starts a feud with another and they both end up in jail because someone got salty over his cheap bird hobby and the wrong autist was on the other end of the deal.

It's curious to me when people hear I raise chickens and rabbits for meat that they assume that I'm in it for the killing. If anything, I'm more empathetic to my creatures than the person that eats a single piece of eight different chickens in their eight pack of Tyson chicken-breasts without a care, thought, or prayer of how those chickens were raised or processed.

My chickens live in a mansion sized (relatively) aviary and I tested it with two huskies. My birds are safe and I will never have to kill anything other than a rat or a very large and vicious animal to keep them safe.

I don’t understand why anyone would have to kill an ordinary townie dog unless they have dozens and dozens of chickens and this aviary model isn’t possible, but also, that puts you so far away from townies that you’re back in “it’s always a frickin pitbull” land.

In my case, I'm technically limited in the number of chickens (three hens, no roosters) I can legally keep due to local ordinances. My only neighbour is cool with the birds, though, so I have a few extra hens. Their run is actually 100 square feet, so, they're pretty happy.

So, does anyone have experience with cinder block chicken-coops? I've got a simple prefabbed coop (lumber prices were outrageous at the time I got started) but I'd like to upgrade to fit more chickens.
You can see they have a simple tunnel to get into the chicken-run but I was thinking a cinder block structure would keep them cool in the summer and perhaps a little more insulated in the winter (not to mention that cinder block is still cheaper than wood right now); these are just my assumptions. Perhaps the stone might be be too cold in the winter, though I plan to keep it stocked with straw, of course.

You should build a chicken run instead of necessitating the slaughter of wildlife. You should negotiate reparations with your neighbors instead of causing more damage for something that might not be their fault. And build an actual good chicken run. Not just a coop.

Is it okay to mix Ducks with Chickens?

I was thinking of starting with 4 hens and a rooster, let them breed until I get an even number of 10. Keep 2 roosters and slaughter any extras once they mature.
After that I could build a little extension and get some Pekin ducks, 4 ducks and a drake.

    My worry is that:
    The two flocks might fight
The drake and roosters won't get along
The drake might try to breed the hens, injuring them
I heard ducks are bad mothers, won't sit on eggs, and won't raise their ducklings

Guys I love chickens so much it's starting to be a real life problem.
I constantly think about them, their feathers. Their beaks, their little feet. Their sounds. I even make chicken sounds randomly throughout the day without realizing it. When I see a picture of a chicken I start smiling. When I am sad I look at pictures of them and try to think which breeds I should keep in the future. I love them so much. It's all I want to talk about but everyone around me is sick of me talking about them already so I just don't. My family starts laughing when they see me watch another video about them. In a nice way, not in a weird way.

domestic cats are some of the most inept predators in the environment. they won’t kill something unless it behaves in a very specific way and are not active hunters. they’re either a problem or not and if they’re a problem active roosters would probably kill them.

Chicken flocks have been known to kill coyotes, and it’s not uncommon to see chickens wandering streets with feral dogs in third world towns. That being said they are prey animals and feel overwhelming amounts of stress around predators. The stress can create lots of problems from losing egg production to molting.

I love chickens, ducks too for that matter. How difficult would it be to keep like 3-4 of them in their own little house that is surrounded by fencing? Could I feed them scraps so I dont have to throw them out? Is it much harder to add on a rooster to those 3-4 hens so I wouldn't have to keep buying new chickens each time I slaughter them? Is an incubator neccesary?

It isn’t difficult, chickens have a high body temperature and can adapt well to freezing climates thanks to their massive down feathers. They need somewhere to perch with a reasonably big space that’s free of wind/rain/sun. They also love yards of grass to peck, just make sure there’s nothing sharp they could eat.
Chickens mostly eat grains, they are omnivores though and will eat anything even meat. However their digestion suffers if they eat non-dense food such as bread, which you can solve by soaking. Young chickens should have medicated food to build up their immunity. You should also mix calcium in their food such as broken eggshells, calcium is very important to their diets and they can become egg bound and die without it. If they start molting feathers you should feed a high protein diet such as cat food.
They need pavement or stones to grind their beaks and nails on, otherwise you’ll have to clip them once in a while.
If you live in freezing climate you’ll need to figure out water.
They also need a supply of grit, this is literally just smooth gravel. They eat it to act as teeth in their stomach.
Roosters aren’t always legal to own, but you can “babysit” them to help breed a flock. There’s also a small chance the hens you buy at the local tractor supply will have a rooster, since its difficult to tell at a young age. I really doubt these ordinances are ever enforced though.
Incubation is necessary if the chicks are separated from their mothers. It’s just a red lamp in a big box filled with newspaper in your house, takes about 3 months. They can be noisy but rarely stinky or much trouble.

        Anonymous

        >They need pavement or stones to grind their beaks and nails on
Do they do this willfully, like a cat grooming its fur? Or do they need a larger stretch of pavement to walk around on and passively grind down their nails? Would something smaller like a cinderblock or two suffice?

          Anonymous

Yes my chickens have several concrete pavers the coop was built on, I haven’t had to trim their claws/beaks ever. They do get pretty long during incubation but you’ll observe their natural behavior of scratching the ground and rubbing their face on it.

Any thoughts on this coop + run design?

I wanted to make one of those really impressive looking ones with plywood sidings but soon found out they're WAY too hot for my climate.

Instead I drew up these plans where I replaces the siding with 90%+ shade cloth, air permeable but still leaves a darkened area for the chickens in the coop.
"Roof" is a water proof tarp. Rest is covered in metal mesh like in the bottom pic.

I'm also questioning the necessity of the raised floor in the first place. Here's an alternate design of the coop without it (Nest Box/Roost bars are too high but I just didn't change them).

It increases the size of the "run" and gives the hens a shady place to hide in which is nice, but it's an extra expense and an extra structure.

They look nice and practical but you do need the raised floor for them to lay comfortably, consider adding wheels or some other type of mobility options to it as chickens will fill it up with poop in less than a week. As a bonus their poop is a really good fertilizer once it's past the burning stage (fresh poop generates heat from decomposition)

Chickens are birds at the end of the day and are simply more comfortable perched up anywhere. Even a horizontal pvc pipe 2 feet off the ground is more comfortable for them

Forgot to add they don't like to lay on the floor but will if there's no better place. Give them a nest higher up and another one on the ground and you'll probably see them take turns laying in the higher up one

Why do you gays keep saying this when it's already been stated multiple times that sometimes it is out of the owners control?

The car analogy is actually right. It's like smashing/burning someones car because their son drove it over your lawn or didn't put the brake on and it rolled into your lawn, and then blaming the father when he was at work for not beating his son into being afraid of leaving the room. There's a point when WASP responsibility ethics break down into absurdity and that's about where it happens. A good catholic would not destroy the car. And a good catholic would not destroy the dog unless the chickens were more valuable, or the dog posed a threat to something more important, such as if they were poor and isolated, and chickens were an important asset to survival. In most of the modern world chickens are either a hobby or a cheap commodity.

And anyone who called you a child over this is right. Because smashing someones train set because their friend kicked over your legos is childish behavior.

You could also say "keep your chickens penned if you don't want anything to happen to them" and then, suddenly, people get pissy, without knowing how similar they are

Because it's the schizophrenic dog hate gay. Most people wont shoot dogs over chickens unless they depend on them for income and it's so far out their chances of locating the owner are nil.

I can recall some cases where a dog was shot over backyard hobby farming and the moron with the gun was charged with felony animal cruelty. When this stuff happens in real life, the courts agree with you. Some moron's suburban backyard hobby is not, in fact, worth killing lost pets over.

So ITT some edgelord is acting tough when every court in the US would ream him if he wasn't on a distant farm which is the only place his behavior is reasonably, and any dogs that show up are probably unwanted anyways.

I do not care, even if dog got out because of an accident, I have the right to defend my own and prevent further harm. I will grant you that immediately resorting to killing the dog is too extreme and like you said accidents happen but if it accidents happen repeatedly I will kill it with clean conscience and it is baffling to me how that is somehow an extreme position to you

Even if it’s a repeat (your concession at last) you’d go to jail if you were anywhere but a farm on county land where the nearest neighbor is at least a mile away and there’s no way their dog would go that far without their knowledge. That’s just how the world outside of lolbertarians fantasies works. There are some dogs you shoot, some dogs you don’t, and some places you leave the gun in the closet and use your words.

The entire idea of morals originated as law, and law originated as moral objectivism. The morals/ethics split was the sex and gender of behavior regulation. Anyone who says you should seek compensation first is right, and probably avoid killing and just wound to stop.

Who said YOU had to pay? I said the dogs owner should pay money for the monetary damages. But you destroying their property does not bring yours back. It is like torching a car because their son parked it on your flower patch and telling THEM “learn to drive”. But if they drove across your lawn and popped a tire, they would have to pay for the grass seed, and their tire. This is extremely basic morality and mutual respect rather than a typical social conservatives animal instinct and love of power fantasies.

It means if the dog gets out you don’t get to kill it over cheap flowers, child. Accidents happen and unless it’s a dog, cat, person, or genuinely expensive animal like a sheep or horse just chase it off and demand monetary compensation instead of shooting $5k over a $5 object.

If a dog was after my chickens I'd catch the dog, call its owner for compensation, or if the owner couldn't be found, take it to the pound since it's clearly a stray.

If a pitbull were after my chickens, I would kill it, because pitbulls are not dogs any more than humans are chimps and dogs are wolves or coyotes. Just one pitbull is a threat to human life and the presence of a pitbull in a pack of dogs can get them to attack people.

This is because I am not a moron and I know that a loose dog is not necessarily purposefully set loose by its owner, that not all dogs are the same, and someone could have opened the gate to their property without permission. I also know chickens are easier to replace than dogs. It's called having morals, instead of a little dick and a bloodthirsty power fantasy. The law written when people were homesteading is on your side, but with the way the courts work, there's a lot people can do to get revenge without the law being able to prove it was them, as many barking pitbull owners have found out with poisonings.

I love my chickens. I let 'em loose and they visit the neighbors and shit in their flower beds and stuff. Almost got eaten by a dog and two foxes. I keep them all winter long and so far they've been lucky December has been really warm. The -30s are coming though. Bless eggs.

Just a reminder the Chicken system of determining a breed is superior to the dog system.

that's just bad selection, not desirable. As far as I know, germans are trying to ajust that

that's what breeding according to standards gets you. They've started pulling it back a bit, but mostly just by stuff like genetic testing for hip dysplasia to treat the symptoms rather than actually ending the practice outright.
The standard says a german shepherd has a smooth, sloped back line from neck to tail, which is true even of healthy dogs because their gait makes them stand like that, but when you put "a shep should have a curved back" in the manual and then people only let the ones with the most curved backs breed you're just artificially selecting for problems.

Not necessarily anon. The “Dong Tao” is breed whose sole purpose is to be turned to a soup with it grotesquely, enormous feet that risks cracking the egg the poor bird is growing in.

You sure they aren't eating them feet? Feet's a delicacy over in China.

Okay, what's their life expectancy. Did you know what I meant by "system of determinating breed?"

I admit, I misinterpreted what you meant, but I just wanted to share the breed, because it looked weird, and it is the breed that pops into my mind when I think of “defective” breeds.

It's okay. But I believe that the dong tao isn't that bad of a breed. Also the dong tao isn't APA recognized.

I free range. Hawks get fireworks shot at them, Australorps also simulate crows preventing attacks, fox get merc'd and trapped. I get to keep the skin.
I haven't had issues. If you can't keep your animals without locking them in cages to "prevent losses" your just shit at self animal husbandry and go program a Facebook page or something, or give enough of a shit to actually keep your flock safe. Im so sick of middle class shitlords abusing chickens cause you all want to larp.

How do you get them inside in the evening? Do you just call them and they come running?

I find chasing them with a drumstick has them falling into line pretty quickly.

Only your inbred hepatitis-ridden brain would think that doing all of that is preferable to just keeping chicken in a safe coop.
