>cheapest horses cost in the $1000-2000 range, sometimes even free.
>you only have to provide food, water, and housing for them, no other maintenance required
>an average horse can carry a rider up around 50 miles in a day
>it's legal to ride a horse on city streets in every state in the country

why are horses as a mode of transportation not more common? They are literally the perfect commuter vehicles.

Cheaper than a motorcycle and most e-bikes, has a big heart to love you with, and fun.

homie, who is gonna clean his poop?

That's the main reason why first trolleys and later cars replaced horses. Machines might been expensive, dangerous, stinky and loud but they also didn't leave piles of shit everywhere. Back in the day cities had entire industries dedicated to removing all that crap.

Horses are pretty intelligent animals. They need plenty of space, tons of stimulation and most importantly, friends. You don't "just" get a horse.

    >Need to own a large chunk of land just for the horse (+ stable)
    >Social herd animal that gets stressed out if left alone. Need at least 2 horses to keep them happy
    >Need a farrier for their hooves
    >Suffered an injury? Get ready for a hefty vet bill
    >Constant shitting
    >People will 100% steal an unsupervised horse, you can't "lock" a horse, just tie it somewhere
Not worth the hassle for personal use, but I see potential for community work. In smaller communities a horse and a cart could be used as a greener school bus for example, why not? Kids would love going to school by horse

Yeah but also the only city I have personally been in that still has hitching posts for a horse is Cheyenne Wyoming.
Where I live it's hard enough finding a place to lock up a 20 year old Walmart mountain bike for a few hours much less trying to keep a horse somewhere for a while.

the soloution is really simple, there are stables where you can rent out space for your horse but its expensive as frick

So you ride your horse to work and valet it to the stables?

This. Self care boarding is anywhere from 200-500 a month, and then adding hay at 350 a ton plus other services really adds up. Horses, to keep in good condition, are expensive.

    >you only have to provide food, water, and housing for them, no other maintenance required
Feeding a horse is more expensive than gas on average. Housing a horse takes money and labor because you have to clean up after them. Also, good luck with vet bills, for horses they can easily cost as much as car repairs, if not more. Plus, horses need special consideration as far as winter and potential pests go.

Horses are great, but it isnt some magic bullet to replace cars. You'd be far better off buying an absolute shitbox for 1k and grinding it into the ground, selling it for scrap and repeating. True, a car can't love you, but you also wont cry when your car dies. Or you shouldn't at least.

      Piggybacking
      >Your horse does not protect you from rain or excessive heat, or bears and mountain lions if you’re innawoods
      >Constant maintenance for all your leather tack adding to the bills
      >Your horse can get bitten by a snake and go lame or just straight up die while traveling
      >If your horse is injured while you’re traveling you’re shit out of luck, it’s more likely a horse will go lame than a car break down
I live in the middle of nowhere and have ridden my horse up to our town on occasion. It’s fun but not as practical as it seems.

A wild animal is much less likely to try approaching you if you have a horse with you. They're big animals that are very capable of taking care of themselves.

Snakes don't approach you, but if your horse steps on a venomous one by accident and it manages to land a bite in self-defense it can get really bad even despite their size
